English term or phrase: kits
In order to further investigate the macroscopic brain observations in Study XXXX, an
independent TWG, comprised of 3 external experts, was convened to evaluate the
affected brain tissues. The TWG performed a blinded evaluation of all affected kit brains
compared with age-matched control kits (obtained from the test facility) to assess the
anatomy of brain. The TWG did not identify any hydrocephalus, but did observe dilated
lateral ventricles (slight to marked severity) in 10 kits across the 4 litters, with 8 of the 10
kits from the 3 litters sired by the same male. The difference in the observations between

animais

Explanation:

Reference: Which one?

Reference information:
The context is not sufficient to pinpoint which animal they are referring to. Although kit is short for kitten (gatinho in Portuguese), it can also be used to designate:

- a young beaver
- a young ferret
- a young fox
- a young rabbit
- a young raccoon
- a young mink
- a young skunk
- a young squirrel
- a young wolverine
- a group of pigeons flying together

Source: Wikipedia

Of those, we can automatically leave out the last, since it's a group of animals.

More context is needed for the sake of accuracy!

Ou animais, como acabo de sugerir. O ideal seria solicitar um esclarecimento do autor do texto.
