Much of the first version of Shadows had been based more or less directly on Cassavetes’ life as a young man—much of which had been spent hanging out with male friends and engaging in stereotypical forms of male horseplay, raillery, and romantic rivalry—wandering the streets at night, drinking and trying to pick up women in bars, joking and playing pranks, and generally carousing, misbehaving, and getting into trouble in every way imaginable. Tom, Dennis, and David were portraits of specific friends, and Ben and Tony were veiled portraits of Cassavetes himself—with Ben representing the night-wandering “artist” and “dreamer” side of the filmmaker’s personality and Tony representing both the player, make-out artist and the ambitious, hustler side of his personality
