The 2009 Wratislavia Cantans festival again celebrates the beauty of vocal music, choral music and the oratorio tradition in buildings of great historical beauty in Wroclaw and the Silesian region.
Most obviously, the form of the festival has expanded. In the past, there were so many concerts in ten days that even the most passionate music-lover might suffer from cultural overload! So the festival has spread its wings; it now centers around three intensive weekends and there are fewer concerts on weekdays. Hopefully this new arrangement will be more convenient for both local concert-goers and Wratislavia Cantans's many visitors.
Once again the festival is a thrilling mix of invited foreign and Polish ensembles of the very highest caliber. International collaborations, especially with Wroclaw's acclaimed ensembles are an important feature of the festival. The festival pays homage to G.F. Handel in his anniversary year with performances of two of his finest oratorios; John Eliot Gardiner's acclaimed Monteverdi Choir make a welcome return to the festival with the vivid and dramatic Israel in Egypt, whilst the deeply spiritual Theodora is given over to the festival director Paul McCreesh and his renowned Gabrieli Consort and Players.
G. Mahler's vast second Symphony is played under the baton of Jacek Kaspszyk and the Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. There are numerous recitals in both Wroclaw and throughout lower Silesia, including Andreas Scholl, Bernarda Fink and the acclaimed Kronos Quartet making its festival debut.
The final weekend will have a pronounced Italian flavor, as Giovanni Antonini and his Il Giardino Armonico perform with the mezzo soprano Bernarda Fink. The festival will close with a spectacular outdoor performance featuring Aleksandra Kurzak, the Festival Symphony Orchestra and Choirs from The Singing Poland project supported by Wrocław Philharmonic Choir. We will hear some of G.Verdi and G. Rossini’s greatest opera arias under the baton of Paul McCreesh.
Translation - Polish Festiwal Wratislavia Cantans 2009 po raz kolejny celebruje piękno muzyki wokalnej, chóralnej i tradycji oratoryjnej we wnętrzach o historycznej urodzie na terenie Wrocławia i Dolnego Śląska.
W tym roku rozszerzyła się forma festiwalu. Niegdyś w przeciągu 10 dni odbywało się tak wiele koncertów, iż nawet największy pasjonat muzyki mógł cierpieć na muzyczne przeładowanie! Tak więc Festiwal rozwija skrzydła; obecnie mniej koncertów odbywa się w dni powszednie, więcej natomiast podczas trzech intensywnych festiwalowych weekendów. Miejmy nadzieję, że nowy porządek wydarzeń będzie dogodniejszy zarówno dla lokalnej publiczności, jak i dla wielu przyjezdnych gości Festiwalu.
Festiwal ponownie jest ekscytującym połączeniem polskich i zagranicznych zespołów najwyższego formatu. Ważnym elementem imprezy jest międzynarodowa współpraca, a w szczególności kolaboracja cenionych wrocławskich zespołów z artystami z różnych stron świata. Tegoroczna edycja Wratislavii Cantans oddaje hołd Georgowi Friedrichowi Händlowi w rocznicę jego śmierci, przygotowując dwa z najświetniejszych oratoriów kompozytora; Sir John Eliot Gardiner wraz z The Monteverdi Choir ponownie zagości na Festiwalu z żywym i dramatycznym Izraelem w Egipcie, natomiast Dyrektor Artystyczny Festiwalu Paul McCreesh i jego Gabrieli Consort & Players przedstawią publiczności głęboko uduchowioną Theodorę.
Orkiestra i Chór Filharmonii Wrocławskiej pod batutą Maestro Jacka Kaspszyka wykona potężną II Symfonię Gustawa Mahlera. W programie wrocławskim i dolnośląskim znajdą się także recitale, wystąpią m.in. Andreas Scholl, Bernarda Fink oraz debiutujący na Festiwalu, ceniony Kronos Quartet.
Ostatni weekend zaobfituje w akcenty włoskie, gdy Giovanni Antonini wraz z Il Giardino Armonico wystąpią z mezzosopranistką Bernardą Fink. Festiwal zakończy się spektakularnym koncertem plenerowym z udziałem Aleksandry Kurzak, Symfonicznej Orkiestry Festiwalowej oraz chórów projektu „Śpiewająca Polska”, wspomaganych przez Chór Filharmonii Wrocławskiej. Usłyszymy największe arie operowe Giuseppe Verdiego i Gioacchino Rossiniego pod batutą Paula McCreesha.
