Why do some people learn new languages so easily and others struggle with every syllable? What exactly is it that separates the naturally fluent form the linguistically leaden? As linguists and psychologists study individuals who easily pick up foreign languages, they have found that many of the ideas that we've cultivated about the "gift" for language may be needlessly discouraging myths. To be sure, experts are still debating the key issue of how we absorb language in the first place. But, doctrine aside, they agree that a lot more of us could achieve conversational ease abroad if we relaxed and erased our biases toward alien sounds and cultures.
To understand why some people are able to acquire languages quickly, researchers are asking basic questions about early verbal development: Why do children so flawlessly and invariably learn their native language? And why do preteens learn second languages without accents? In theory, if we could apply these youthful study models to stodgy adulthood, we'd be nearly as adept.
Kids don't care whether their sentences are structurally elegant or grammatically pristine: they just want to get their message across and to understand others. When they don't, they thrash through different attempts until they succeed. In contrast to this empirical approach is so-called formal or conscious learning, in which we focus on the rules of language, achieving fluency through analysis and repetition.
Most of us, of course, pic up foreign languages through conscious learning -- in classrooms, or via audio tapes. But researchers suspect that unconscious language acquisition may actually be far superior even for adults. Indeed, what distinguishes people who are deft at foreign languages seems to be their ability to recapture the sponge-like mind of a child. Besides, it's not necessarily how well you hear something, it's how much you let in.
Linguists believe that those who are adept at languages are people who don't let their adult propensity toward abstract thinking and self-consciousness block this flow of new information. For them, acquiring a new language is a matter of filling in and refining a mosaic, not plotting a logical route to the goal.

La mayoría de nosotros adquirimos lenguas extranjeras mediante el aprendizaje consciente -- en salones de clase o por cassettes de audio. Pero los investigadores sospechan que la adquisición lingüística inconsciente en realidad podría ser mucho mejor, aún para los adultos. Efectivamente, lo que distingue a los que tienen maña para las lenguas extranjeras parece ser que son capaces de recuperar el cerebro absorbente de un niño. Además, no se trata tanto de lo bien que uno entienda sino de cuánto uno se exponga.

En muchas culturas del mundo antiguo las mujeres estaban sometidas a la jerarquía imperante de la sociedad patriarcal. Eran, literalmente, ocultadas; desplazadas del espacio público donde se tomaban las decisiones que afectaban a la comunidad; confinadas en el espacio doméstico. Eran, más allá de sus capacidades, madres, hijas o esposas, y en el mejor de los casos emergían desde las sombras mediante la influencia indirecta, dando lugar a aquel célebre "detrás de todo hombre hay una gran mujer". Sin embargo, en aquellas sociedades preindustriales varias de ellas fueron capaces de trascender los rígidos e institucionalizados roles de género para ser protagonistas -no tras bambalinas, sino con todas las luces del escenario- de la Historia.
Dueñas de su destino, pero también de otros bajo su tutela, ellas gobernaron sobreviviendo en un mundo de hombres. Otras llevaron su rebeldía un paso más allá: ocuparon el espacio masculino y se ganaron el respeto, pese a las resistencias sociales, de sus contemporáneos. Ese espacio no era otro que el campo de batalla. Con frecuencia las fuentes históricas han tenido -por prejuicios, en un proceso de censura de actitudes consideradas impropias del rol femenino- a ocultar las hazañas de estas aguerridas hijas de su tiempo. Pero sus vidas fueron tan extraordinarias que ocultarlas resultó materialmente imposible. In the ancient world, women of many cultures were subjected to the prevailing hierarchy of patriarchal society. They were literally hidden, removed from the public sphere where the decisions that affected the community were made, and confined to the domestic sphere. Despite their abilities, they were mothers, daughters and wives, and, in the best of cases, they arose from the shadows by means of indirect influence, giving way to the famous saying "behind every great man there is a great woman." However, in those preindustrial societies, several of them were able to transcend beyond rigid and institutionalized gender roles and become the protagonists of history, not behind the scenes, but in the spotlight.
Makers of their own destiny and that of others in their care, these women governed by surviving in a world of men. This rebelliousness was taken further by some by occupying the male sphere and earning the respect of their contemporaries, despite social resistance. That sphere was none other than the battlefield. More often than not, biased historical sources tend to conceal the accomplishments of these brave daughters of their time by censoring behavior deemed inappropriate for the role of women. But their lives were so extraordinary that hiding them has been physically impossible. [These were] women who, in the end, broke the norm and wrote their share of history by leading armies or fighting in the frontlines, thus creating their own extraordinary legend.

There are well over three hundred species of hummingbirds, all native to the Americas. The vast majority, not surprisingly, are found in the tropics. Only a handful of species reach the United States; southern Arizona hosts more than a dozen of those.
Costa's Hummingbird is the only true desert hummer here. Black-chinned and Broad-billed Hummingbirds nest in streamside woods in the summer, while Anna's Hummingbird, a recent invader from California, nests in the same areas during the winter.
Our region hosts the greatest variety of hummers in late summer, when several species are on their way south. They compete for space around the blooms that follow the summer rains.
Hummingbirds are the dominant nectarivorous, or nectar-feeding, birds in the western hemisphere. Hummingbirds also eat many small, soft-bodied arthropods.
North American hummingbirds are highly territorial, both sexes protecting feeding territories, males protecting courtship territories, and females protecting nesting territories. These territories are protected by displays, songs, chases, or the mere presence of the hummer on an exposed perch.
The nest is not much larger than a jigger or shot glass. The nest may be lined with hair or feathers and decorated with leaves, or bark strips, depending on the species.
Only two bean-sized eggs are laid and incubated for about two weeks, depending on the species.
Like many animals, most hummingbirds die during their first year. After that, their life expectancy may increase to three or four years.

• Hummingbirds' hearts are larger in proportion to body size than those of any other warm-blooded animal.
• Hummers have the most rapid heart rate for a bird: up to 500 beats per minute at rest and 1260 beats per minute during activity.
• Their flight muscles account for 25 to 30 percent of body weight.
• Hummers have the most rapid wing beats of birds: up to 80 beats per second.
• They have high body temperatures: 105° to 109°F (40.5° to 42.5°C).
• Hummingbirds may consume 70 percent of their body weight, in solid food per day, 8 to 12 calories, and 4 to 8 times their body weight, in water.

En América, hay más de 300 especies nativas de colibríes, también conocidas como chupa rosas en Sonora. No es sorprendente que gran parte de ellas se encuentren en los trópicos y que solo un puñado de especies llegue a Estados Unidos. El sur de Arizona es el hogar de más de una docena de éstas.
El cabeza violeta o colibrí de Costa, es el único verdadero colibrí desértico. El barba negra y el pico ancho anidan en bosques ribereños, mientras que el cabeza roja o colibrí de Ana - un reciente invasor de California - anida en esas zonas durante el invierno.
En nuestra región, el grado de diversidad es mayor después del verano porque es cuando varias especies migran hacia el sur. Después de las lluvias de verano, los colibríes suelen competir por el territorio alrededor de los retoños que brotan.
