Polish to English: Polish Modernism General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Kultywowana nadwrażliwość i nadświadomość rodziła pesymizm.
Translation - English Persistent need for self-determination was one of the most prominent signs of times "breakthrough". Reflection accompanied by acts and fulfillments like a shadow, intensifying or weakening them, enhancing or rubbing their meaning. Cultivated sensitivity and super-consciousness gave birth to pessimism. Similar symptoms can be tracked in the whole Europe at the time, in all the movements of the "young nations": Young Scandinavia, Young Belgium, Young Germany, but in our pessimism of those groups and individuals that made relatively compact, peculiar, in the area of Polish culture certainly the first intellectual and the artistic avant-garde, had different than elsewhere current, more extensive reasons and sources and a deeper meaning. Here bitterness penetrated not only the general atmosphere caused by "agony of the century" as born of a penetrating view of political and social situation of the country, it was as if the ultimate culmination of hopelessness and malaise, feeling which through all the century was harassing all generations.
English to Polish: The Viennese Superblocks General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Architecture
Source text - English 4. The Viennese Superblocks
While Austria lacked a vital brick vernacular comparable to that which still obtained at the turn of the century in Holland, Scandinavia and Germany, the superblocks, or Wohnhofe, built in Vienna by the Socialist City Council between 1919 and 1930 were, nonetheless, intended to be read as “vernacular” culture even if the specific form that this expression should take varied widely from block to block.
Translation - Polish 4.
