Biographical information:

I began Spanish classes at school in 4th grade and continued to study Spanish throughout college. While still in school, I attended ethnographic field school in Salango, Ecuador, which sparked a lifelong love for the Spanish language. In 2009, I moved to Colombia, where I lived until 2015.

While living in Colombia, I translated two texts for the Universidad del Valle Press, the first on pre-Columbian archaeology, the second on postmodern art. I also translated film content from Spanish to English for Kromaphono Studios.

While working as the coordinator of a CDC funded HIV prevention pilot program in La Villita, Chicago, I translated medical questionnaires, focus group transcripts, and public health campaign materials from English to Spanish, with careful attention to regional idioms and literacy levels (our patients were primarily from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala). I conducted sexual health education sessions in Spanish and gave public health presentations in Spanish at local organizations such as Universidad Popular. I also provided patient advocacy services to particularly vulnerable individuals and couples. Finally, I conducted community outreach in Spanish to let my friends and neighbors know that Cook County provides medical care to patients of scant resources, regardless of citizenship status or documentation.
