USCITA TRAVERSATA HIELO PATAGONICO SUR
Dopo quaranta giorni passati in totale autonomia Eloise Barbieri, Antonella Giacomini e Nadia Tiraboschi sabato 25 novembre hanno raggiunto il piccolo centro di El Chaltén. Le avevamo lasciate nei pressi del Passo Marconi dove erano arrivate dopo 4 giorni di intensa bufera, a causa della quale avevano perso la tenda principale.
Ecco il racconto in diretta delle protagoniste.
Arrivate alla base del passo Marconi abbiamo trovato rifugio in un argine di neve scavando una “cueva” che ci ha riparate dalla bufera che è continuata per altri due giorni depositando ancora un metro di neve sullo Hielo. Finalmente il terzo giorno ci siamo svegliate con i raggi del sole ed abbiamo quindi deciso di tentare di proseguire la nostra traversata, consapevoli però che la perdita della tenda principale implicava che potessimo tentare di raggiungere al massimo l’uscita all’alterzza del ghiacciaio Upsala e solo con almeno 3 giorni di bel tempo. In questa giornata lo Hielo ci ha regalato incredibili panorami sul circolo degli altari e abbiamo potuto ammirare il Cerro Torre ed il Fitz Roy in condizioni invernali, con le pareti ovest incrostate di neve. Abbiamo proseguito la nostra traversata fino all’altezza del Nunatak Viedma, a due giorni dal ghiacciaio Upsala raggiungibile attraversando una zona estremamente crepacciata e resa insidiosa dalle recenti abbondanti nevicate. L’umore era ottimo, la bella giornata e i panorami mozzafiato ci avevano ricaricato le batterie nonostante piccoli incidenti di percorso. L’attraversata del ghiacciaio Viedma è risultata insidiosa a causa di laghetti d’acqua di deposito nascosti da un sottile strato di neve che ci hanno rallentato e hanno causato una caduta in acqua per fortuna senza conseguenze. Il giorno seguente all’alba ci siamo svegliate fiduciose, ma purtroppo il tempo già volgeva al peggio… questa è la Patagonia, bella ma imprevedibile! Considerati i giorni ancora a nostra disposizione e soprattutto l’impossibilità di affrontare un’altra bufera con la tenda di emergenza, abbiamo ritenuto fosse più saggio rinunciare all’uscita sul ghiacciaio Upsala per ripiegare sul passo del Viento. Il ghiacciaio Viedma, come la maggior parte dei ghiacciai che si buttano nei laghi argentini, da anni sta subendo un veloce ritiro e per questo motivo percorrerlo ha richiesto un’attenta ricerca dei passaggi migliori tra crepacci e seraccate il tutto come sempre accompagnato da un fortissimo vento. L’uscita dal passo del Viento ci ha impegnate per 3 giorni durante i quali abbiamo dovuto riprendere i trasporti a spalle di tutto il nostro materiale dopo aver lasciato il ghiacciaio e quindi l’uso delle slitte. Arrivate alla base del passo, alla Laguna Toro, ci sono venuti incontro Manrico, Giuliano e Marta (rispettivamente marito di Antonella e amici) che ci hanno accolte con una bella bottiglia di “vino tinto” e tanto buon umore. Il giorno 25 siamo scese dalla Laguna Toro fino a El Chalten in 4 ore a cavallo, abbiamo fatto lunghissime docce e abbondanti mangiate di ottima carne argentina.
La Patagonia ci ha accolte, ma non si è risparmiata:

Antonella “pensavo di conoscere le bufere patagoniche, ma mi sbagliavo…”
Eloise (prima volta in Patagonia) “mi hanno detto che più di così non potevo avere dalla Patagonia, nel bene e nel male…”
Ora le aspettiamo in Italia (rientro previsto per il 3 dicembre) per sentire i loro racconti in prima persona e vedere le splendide immagini.

DEPARTURE THROUGH HIELO PATAGONICO SUR
After forty days spend in total freedom, on Saturday 25 November, Eloise Barbieri, Antonella Giacomini and Nadia Tiraboschi reached the small village of El Chaltén. We had left them near Paso Marconi, where they had arrived after four days of intense blizzard, due to which they had lost the main tent.
This is the way they tell their story.
Once we reached the base of Marconi pass we found refuge in a snow bank by digging a “cave” that sheltered us from the blizzard, which raged on for another two days, depositing another meter of snow on Hielo. Finally, on the third day we woke up with the sun’s rays and so we decided to try to continue our trek, even if we were aware that the loss of the main tent meant that we could try to at the most reach the exit by the Upsala glacier with at least three days of good weather. That day Hielo offered us incredible views of the Los Altares circle and we were able to admire Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy in winter conditions, with the west walls crusted with snow. We continued on our way until we got up to Nunatak Viedma, a two-day journey from the Upsala glacier, which may be reached via an area full of crevasses, made hazardous by the recent heavy snowfall. Spirits were high, the beautiful day and the breathtaking panorama had recharged our batteries despite small setbacks. Going across Viedma glacier was quite tricky because of pools of stagnant water hidden by a thin layer of snow, slowing us down and causing a fall into the water—albeit of no consequence, fortunately. The following day we woke up full of confidence at dawn, but unfortunately the weather was already worsening… this is Patagonia, beautiful but unpredictable! Considering the days we still had at our disposal and especially the impossibility of facing another blizzard with the emergency tent, we decided it would be wiser to give up the plan to reach the Upsala glacier exit and return to Paso del Viento. Like most of the other glaciers around the Argentine lake area, for years Viedma has been shrinking and for this reason traversing it requires careful analysis of the best passages between crevasses and icefalls, all of it, as usual, accompanied by a strong gale. Coming out of the paso del Viento took us three days, during which we had to carry all our gear on our backs after having left the glacier, and as a consequence, the sleds. We were met at the base of the pass in Laguna Toro by Manrico (Antonella’s husband) and friends Giuliano and Marta, who welcomed us with a nice bottle of red wine and plenty of good cheer. On the 25th we descended from Laguna Toro down to El Chalten in four hours on horseback. We took extra long showers and ate prodigious amounts of excellent Argentine meat.
Patagonia received us, but it was not particularly hospitable:

Antonella “I thought I knew Patagonian blizzards, but boy, was I wrong …”
Eloise (first time in Patagonia) “they tell me that I couldn’t have had any more from Patagonia, either good or bad…”
Now we wait for them in Italy (their return is scheduled for 3 December) to listen to them tell their story and to see the fabulous images they captured.
