English to Portuguese: The Beauty of Pernambuco’s Carnaval Through the Eyes of a Brooklyn Photographer in San Francisco
Source text - English
Everyone thinks they know Carnaval in Brazil.

The truth is that there’s a Carnaval that’s different from the stereotypical festival in Rio with its glitter and bikinis and exotic headdress.

Few foreign tourists experience the more folkloric version of Carnaval in the northeastern Brazilian city of Recife, Pernambuco. Recife’s Carnaval is a cornucopia of unique musical styles, a treasure of cultural fusion combining Afro-European tradition with Brazilian modernity, both in the city and the country.

Now, Jason Gardner, a professional photographer from Brooklyn, New York gives us a glimpse of this “other” Carnaval. The Brazilian Consulate of San Francisco will exhibit his work from November 11 to February 11, 2011, during the Consulate’s usual hours, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Monday to Friday. The opening will be Wednesday, November 10, at the Consulate, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The photographer will be at the opening.

Called “Images of Pernambuco,” these photographs take viewers to a world of magic, colors, and movement. “It is a world of discovery – full of surprises and striking beauty,” says Deputy Consul General Evaldo Freire. “We have followed Jason’s work for several years, and his passion for Pernambuco’s distinctive music and dance, combined with his selective eye, has produced an artist’s collection of documentary images.”

“I’ve returned to Recife five times during the past seven years,” says Gardner. “I did extensive ethnographic research before I shot my first images. I didn’t just go to Brazil, aim my camera at pretty girls and shoot. Instead, part of my ‘photographer’s research’ was following a few leading traditional music groups, making portraits of the performers.”

Gardner was fascinated by what he found. He noticed the mixture of African and indigenous cultures, so prevalent in their folk dances and rituals. Eventually he was accepted by these musicians, and witnessed firsthand the Carnaval preparations, private rituals, and street festivals that sometimes take all night. He observed unforgettable images now captured by his camera. The behind-the-scenes photos in Gardner’s collection are not only significant for their beauty, but they have a high anthropological and sociological value.

More than learning about and witnessing the performances, Gardner discovered something new about himself. “I find that the storytelling and emotions that came forth as I captured these images have helped me in my day-to-day commercial and photojournalism work.”

There’s no doubt that Carnaval has left an impression on Jason Gardner. His photographs will probably leave one on you.
