Dansk Forening for Ældre Lystfartøjer er en sammenslutning for alle, der interesserer sig for at bevare vor flåde af veteranfartøjer.

Foreningens grundlag

De mange kilometer kystlinie hvor Danmark åbner sig mod havet, er den direkte grund til danskernes maritime traditioner. Først som søfarende med havet som næringsvej, og de sidste 150 år ligeledes med sejlads som et rekreativt formål.

Verden over har danske konstruktører, bådebyggere og sejlere nydt respekt for deres evner. Resultatlister fra sejladser om såvel Olympiske- som verdensmesterskaber er spækket med danske navne og utallige er de danskbyggede både der har været benyttet i disse sejladser. Siden den organiserede sejlsports allerførste år har danske konstruktører været repræsenteret i internationale forbund til udvikling af nye og bedre bådtyper.

Når vi synger om ”sejlernes tusindtal” er det ingen overdrivelse. På store værfter, på små værfter og af selvbyggere er et meget stort antal både blevet bygget til danske sejlere. De første mange år med træ som det overvejende byggemateriale. Et materiale der i 1960erne blev erstattet af glasfiber.

Konstruktion og sømandskab til trods har træbådene vist sig følsomme overfor tidens gang. I årene efter 2. verdenskrig, blev der eksporteret utallige skønne fartøjer til USA, fordi der var penge at tjene. En lang række både blev endvidere hugget op eller fik lov at gå til. Andre både blev udsat for eksperimenter i sådan en grad, at de ikke mere står til at rede.

Foreningens stiftelse, godt hjulpet af KDY i almindelighed og Bent Aarre i særdeleshed, var en oplagt chance for at gøre noget ved den vigende interesse omkring ældre lystfartøjer. Siden da har det vist sig, at der er behov for både DFÆL og 2 lystfartøjsmuseer. Det bedste er imidlertid, at så mange både som muligt stadig er aktive på vandet, og at den enkelte ejer er motiveret for at holde sin båd i sømandsmæssigt forsvarlig stand, men ud over det er der et stort behov for at samle effekter og oplysninger på museer og i arkiver. I disse år er de sidste sejlere, bådebyggere, sejlmagere og andre aktive fra den sidste tid, mens det massive træ var det foretrukne byggemateriale, er ved at takle af. Hermed mistes væsentlige førstehånds vidnesbyrd om et håndværk, og en kultur der forsvinder.

Der er i samfundet i dag en generel og stigende interesse for det traditionelle og klassiske. Heri ligger en potentiel mulighed at gøre foreningens formål levende. Mange bådejeres og specialklubbers har allerede kastet sin interesse og kærlige omsorg på de bevaringsværdige ældre lystfartøjer. Det er til disse sejlere, DFÆL. henvender sig. Rundt i Danmarks havne ligger der endnu mange fartøjer som er værdige til opmærksomhed. DFÆL er det samlingspunkt, hvor bådejerne kan dele erfaringer med at sejle og bevare bådene. så vi i mange år endnu kan nyde vores traditionsfulde lystfartøjer, der skal fortæller os om sejlsportens barndom og ungdom.

DFÆL's foundation

The Danes' strong maritime traditions may be directly attributed to Denmark's extensive coastline. Historically, its seashore has been a livelihood to a seafaring people, although over the past 150 years it's also been a recreational focus point, bridging the 19th and 21st century maritime cultures.

Throughout the world, danish naval architects, boatbuilders and sailors have commanded great respect for their skills. The results pages of top competitive sailors have been peppered with danish names and innumerable are the danish built boats aiding their great success. Since sailing's first year as an organized sport, danish naval architects have been represented in the international federation developing new and better boats.
It is no exaggeration when we sing of the 'sailors in their thousands'. Irrespective of the size or means of the yard, danish builders have succeeded in constructing a great number of revered boats, chiefly providing for the legion of Danish sailors. It may be seen through the development of these boats that, initially, wood was used as a building material, then later, in the 1960s, this was largely replaced by fibreglass, or Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), leading to a new age of craft.

Construction and seamanship aside, wooden boats have proved themselves worthy over time. During the years subsequent to World War II, many beautiful Danish vessels were exported to the USA, so lucrative was the transatlantic market. Many others were cut up or left to rot away. Of those that weren't, some were used for experiments that left the vessels irreparable.

The founding of DFÆL, with the help of the Royal Danish Yacht Club (KDY) and in particular, Bent Aarre, was a timely opportunity to address the problem of dwindling interest in classic craft. Since then, not only has the activity of DFÆL been acknowledged as necessary, but also that of two danish museums of recreational craft. Primarily, the objective is that as many boats as possible remain active on the water, moreover, that individual boat owners be enthused to maintain their boats in a seaworthy state. Beyond that, there is a great need to collect relevant artefacts and information for the museums and archives. These days, the last sailors, sailmakers and boatbuilders of the generation of traditional wooden constructions are disappearing, wherein finds the disappearance of valuable first hand knowledge, craftsmanship and culture.

In today's society, there is an increasing interest for all traditional and classic. Herein lies an opportunity for DFÆL's ambitions to be realised. Already, there are numerous boat owners and clubs investing interest and care in the conservation of historic craft. It is to these people that DFÆL addresses itself, for in Denmark's harbours, yet many craft worthy of attention may still be seen. DFÆL is the hub around which individuals may share experiences through sailing and conserving boats, in order that, for many years to come, we may enjoy our traditional craft that tell of the birth and growth of the sport of sailing.
