Chinese to English: A Drug-free Future for Teenagers General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Source text - Chinese
Translation - English Meanwhile, some unprecedented risks that have not been encountered before are coming to today's teenagers. Over the past 20 years, recreational (synthetic) drugs have become widespread in recreational venues full of youngsters. This psychotropic drug acts directly on the central nervous system; once sufficient can produce euphoria. It causes people to exhibit more intense feelings than they do with heroin. It is more addictive than heroin, and more dangerous than traditional drugs.

(American College of Gastroenterology)
Translation - English Most NSAIDs work by blocking two enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2, which help produce substances that are the real villains in the pain picture, prostaglandins hormone-like substances that perform a variety of regulatory jobs in the body. Prostaglandins are created at the sites of injury or inflammation and cause the pain receptors in the surrounding area to become more sensitive. By decreasing prostaglandin production, NSAIDs lessen the sensation of pain and reduce inflammation.
The problem is that the COX-1 enzyme has an important job to do: it helps produce the prostaglandins that protect the stomach lining from the corrosive effects of stomach acid. When COX-1 is blocked, stomach upset, bleeding, and ulcers can occur. These are well-known side effects of all NSAIDs.
Individuals react differently to dosage, but in general, taking more than the daily recommended amount of an NSAID carries a significant risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and is unlikely to provide additional pain relief. Ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding linked to the use of NSAIDs are responsible for an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 deaths in the U.S. each year, and more than 100,000 hospitalisations, according to the American College of Gastroenterology. In February 2007 the American Heart Association advised physicians that, except for aspirin, NSAIDs and especially COX-2 inhibitors should be used only as a last line of treatment for people with heart disease or heart disease risk factors. AlI NSAIDs present an additional risk of kidney damage when used at high doses for a prolonged period of time.
Admissibility and weight of evidence General field: Law/Patents
Source text - Chinese
Translation - English Although evidence of information about a particular fact may be admissible, the court will not necessarily believe or act on that evidence.
If the information about a fact is the direct observation of a witness, the court may simply disbelieve the witness. This may occur for a number of reasons. For example, it may have been a long time since the events in question happened, the witness may give confused testimony, or may have some physical incapacity (e.g. poor eyesight).
More usually, evidence of information given in court will not be 'direct observation' evidence. Instead it will be evidence that suggests, or from which it can be inferred, that a particular fact occurred. In this regard, the weight of evidence of a record can be adversely affected if it is not contemporaneous with the events it documents.
For example, the Commonwealth, in litigation, seeks to prove that a certain conversation took place. The Commonwealth has located a Minute to the Secretary of the agency which quotes from a file note of the conversation. However the actual file note of the conversation cannot be found. The Commonwealth produces the Minute in evidence. That document is found to be admissible. The weight given to that evidence however may vary and depend on other evidence e.g. evidence by the author of the file note that the extract is a true extract, evidence that the file note was written at the time of the conversation.

Translation - English In Western countries, although amendments and revisions to accounting practices or standards do not have legal binding power, they are formulated according to an existing national legal framework which is provided in most cases by Companies Ordinance or Acts Companies Ordinance or Acts together with other regulations applicable to individual industries, such as the Banking Ordinance for financial institutions and Listing Rules or Securities Acts for listed or public companies, provide a framework upon which accounting professional bodies formulate accounting and auditing standards. These standards form the basis for establishing accounting principles, and conventions, that allow enterprises flexibility in formulating their own accounting policies best suited to their individual circumstances. The ultimate objective, in a nutshell, is to produce a set of financial statements that are 'true and fair'.
Until 1994 China lacked a regulatory framework on which accounting and auditing standards could be set since the country's first national Companies Laws were not effective until 1 July
1994. The lack of such a framework also rendered the formulation of other regulations, such as the national Securities Laws and Listing Regulations, more difficult and time consuming.
Nevertheless, having realized the need for establishing acceptable accounting principles to enable PRC enterprises to attract foreign investment or have their stocks listed on overseas markets, the MOF promulgated a separate set of accounting regulations for selected joint stock companies in January 1992.
In addition, MOF made effective on July 1, 1993, the first set of accounting standards - Accounting Standards for Enterprises - applicable to all PRC enterprises. Although it might be confusing at times which accounting regulations or standards would apply, together with the then Accounting Regulations for Foreign Investment Enterprises of the PRC, they have provided relatively uniform accounting practices for enterprises to follow in preparing their financial statements. More importantly because of the lack of a complete regulatory and conceptual framework, these accounting rules or regulations are so comprehensive that they encompass accounting concepts, disclosure requirements, accounting entries, control procedures, record keeping and some aspects of auditing requirements and liquidation.

Skin to skin contact means that the baby is placed naked on your skin (between your breasts) with a towel or blanket placed over the top of both of you.
Ensure your baby's nose is clear and the baby is able to breath. This will keep your baby warm and if left undisturbed, your baby will make his her way to your breast and start feeding. If you are not sure, a midwife will be there to support and help you.
Your baby may take a while to attach to your breast for the first time. It is important to keep your baby skin to skin and allow your baby the time to adjust following the birth.Breastfeeding will follow naturally.
Some women need medication during labour. Their babies may need some help with finding the breast and starting to feed.
If breastfeeding is delayed, it is important to express your milk at this time (preferably in the first two hours after birth). This stimulates your breasts to build your milk supply. Your baby will then be fed this milk (colostrum).

Translation - English Because of historical and political factors peculiar to the country, China had a rather late start in environmental protection work. However, on entering the 21 century, an environmental protection policy focusing on sustainable developments taking shape rapidly in China, and the Chinese media as well as the public are more and more concerned about the environment. Following the further development of the Chinese legal system, environmental protection will definitely be written into the Chinese law in the near future. Furthermore, environmental protection will definitely be an obligation of all Chinese enterprises, and a monitoring and punishment system in relation to environmental protection will be established and perfected. In the future, any enterprises in China which fail to meet their obligation for the environment will find it impossible to carry on their business because of the effect of a series of punitive measures.
To the enterprises, however that they have the will to adequately protect the environment does not mean pollution will not happen in their enterprises. In their operation and the process of production, any sector could cause pollutions to the environment. Even though they might have set up a strict environmental protection monitoring mechanism, there is no guarantee that nothing will ever go wrong and there will never be any incidents of pollution.

Tips for fuel-efficient driving General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Translation - English If it's felt like the cost of fuel has been burning a bigger-than-usual hole in your pocket in the last few weeks, you'd be right.
While there's not a lot you can do about the increasing price of crude oil, there are a number of ways you can drive down your fuel bill.
The way you drive and the condition of your car also has an impact on the amount of fuel you use. Here are a few tips to help.
• Avoid short trips: cars can use up to 20% more fuel when the engine is cold.
• Avoid over-revving if you're driving a manual. In an automatic, ease back slightly on
the accelerator once the car gathers momentum. Avoid stop/start driving if you can.
• Don't speed: fuel consumption increases significantly over around 90km/h. At 110km/h your car can use up to 25% more fuel than it would at 90km/h.
• Unless your car is programmed to do so, it's not safe to turn off your engine at every
red light. However, if you're parked, even for a short period, turning it off will save more fuel than you'll lose restarting the engine.
• Air conditioning can increase fuel use by up to 10%, but at speeds of more than 80km/h an open window will cost you more in aerodynamic drag.
• Service your vehicle regularly. Check your tyre pressure at least once a month.
• Use the recommended fuel type. If you use regular unleaded in a car designed for premium, expect slightly lower performance and fractionally higher consumption. Using premium unleaded in a car designed for regular may provide better fuel consumption in some newer vehicles, but it's unlikely to offset the extra cost of the fuel.
English to Chinese: Junk Insurance General field: Marketing Detailed field: Insurance
Source text - English Junk insurance is a term coined by consumer advocates and lawyers to define add-on insurance policies that are sold at the time of the purchase of goods and provide little value to a purchaser. These policies can include insurance cover for nonessential parts of cars, such as tyres and rims, and certain rights under a loan that are already provided under statute.
Customers are required to pay additional and ongoing costs for these add-on junk insurance policies, therefore a consumer may be paying for certain cover they are not aware of and on which they are unlikely to ever make a claim. Some insurance products are designed with so many limitations that make they completely worthless. Many consumers are paying for these policies as part of their car finance agreements, which means they are paying interest and fees on the cost of borrowing money to pay for the junk policy.
If you think you have a complaint against an insurer who sold you an insurance product, you can raise your complaint directly with the relevant business first. Details of how to make a complaint should be on their website or in the paperwork you received when you bought the insurance
Today, new reforms are being implemented by the federal government in a bid to help curtail the sale of add-on insurance. The laws make it mandatory for consumers to be given a four-day window between buying the principal product, such as a car loan, and being asked to purchase the add-on insurance.

English to Chinese: Reforming the PhD System General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - English Mental health issues are rife: approximately one-third of PhD students are at risk of having or developing a psychiatric disorder like depression. The high level of dropouts is similarly worrying – and possibly another symptom of the same problem with the system. Research suggests that on average, 50% of PhD students leave graduate school without finishing. What’s more, aspiring scientists who manage to finish usually take much longer than originally planned. For instance, a PhD in Germany is supposed to take three years, according to university regulations, but most students need five years to complete one. The result is that in most countries, PhD students usually don’t graduate until they are well into their 30s.
Although 80% of science students start their PhD with the intention to pursue a career in science, their enthusiasm typically wanes to the point that just 55% plan to continue in academia when nearing graduation. In any case, most are unlikely to be able to continue. One study found that for every 200 people who complete a PhD, only seven will get a permanent academic post and only one will become a professor.
I want us to reimagine a PhD system that is designed not to win kudos within the academic community, but rather aimed at discovering something new that will be useful for practitioners and have real social impact. This system would see students go out into the field and talk to practitioners from day one of their research, rather than spending the first year (or more) reading obscure academic literature.

Source text - English Authorities have warned residents in NSW its wet weather event remains “volatile”, with Warragamba, Sydney’s largest dam, expected to spill as the east coast deluge tips its capacity past 100 per cent.
WaterNSW, the government body that manages the dam, advises Sydney’s Warragamba dam “has reached capacity and is likely to spill overnight”. A spokesman said it could possibly peak “Saturday mid-morning” and that there could be an overflow, or “downstream impacts”, following the release of water.
Sydney’s Hawkesbury-Nepean river system, which the dam feeds into, had renewed flooding alerts from Friday afternoon.
Residents in low lying areas, such as North Richmond, are urged to listen to the latest information from the Bureau of Meteorology and “make plans to leave if advised to do so”.
The area was heavily affected by the huge floods of March.
Meanwhile, the NSW State Emergency Service has issued a “top priority” evacuation warning for low lying parts of Scone in the Upper Hunter. The warning applies to eight streets where a number of properties have been inundated, and at least 77 homes emptied.
River levels are expected to continue to rise overnight and peak early Saturday Morning, with major flooding. Moderate flooding is likely along the Hunter River at Denman overnight Friday into Saturday, with the peak expected around 8.00 am Saturday.
The NSW State Emergency Service has attended multiple incidents in the past 24 hours due to flooding, mostly vehicles in rivers, and have received almost 300 calls for
assistance.

It's fair to say that Cottesloe Beach is Perth’s pin-up beach. With its feathery soft blonde sand, its clear aquamarine ocean, its grassed terraces and its sprawling Norfolk pines, it charms without even trying. A 20-minute drive from the city centre, Cottesloe looks its best in the morning before the wind, locally known as the Fremantle Doctor, blows in from about 10.30am. Or bring a picnic later in the day. Waves are generally gentle but surf lifesavers are regularly on duty; look for the red and yellow flags and swim between them. Marine Parade, which runs parallel to the coast, has numerous cafés and bars that compete for attention. We love The Cottesloe Beach Hotel for its summery vibe and white decor made fun with bright colour splashes. Start with a cocktail in The Beach Club's sunken lounge then move into Cott and Co for a seafood dinner at sunset.
