Nik-On/Off (asker) Dec 2, 2006:
Jack, it is the institute of geotechnical mechanics. Does it change smth.?
Jack slep Dec 2, 2006:
What's the institute? It could be investigations, studies, research, trials, etc., which are all more or less the same but with their differences?

Peer comment(s):

neutral Olga Cartlidge : I would put " launched a major research program." - We are talking scientific research here, Jack.

Thank you, and yes I'll buy that as an excellent alternative!

launched an extensive research on

Broad-scale was the best version in my oppinion, but they don't really use it like that in the spoken/written American English.
Example sentence:

The institute launched an extensive research on the effects of asbestos on the raspiratory system.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Simon Hollingsworth : I mentioned that "research" APPEARS as an adjective in your phrase. If you wish it to be a noun, it is a collective noun and SHOULD NOT use an article (and its rEspitatory system)

Yes, there should be an article, since research here is a noun.
