Hi,
I am translating a report about the effects of soil decontamination treatment and I am struggling with the meaning of 'prose pacciamate'.
It appears several times throughout the text:
Thanks

mulched ridges
prosa = porca > ridge between two furrows
(source, Dizionario di Agricoltura, paper ed.)
pacciamare = mulching: the practice of spreading organic materials—such as straw, compost, or wood chips—over otherwise bare soil between and among crop plants. Mulching helps to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and build soil organic matter.

For the synonymity of 'prosa' and 'porca', here's another (indirect) reference from the Wörterbuch der Landwirtschaft (sorry, hard copy only):
aratura a prose/porche: ridging

Mr Murray (X)
: I think 'furrow' would be a depression, but instead, this machine leaves a mound/row of mulch

yes, but mulched furrow is something else, it must be furrow before mulching, i think.

: A furrow goes down, a ridge goes up... It is NOT a mound OF mulch, it is covered in mulch. Maurizio

I would say mulching techniques but, again, I don't spend much of my time on gardens or agricultural sites...
yet, after some search, I've found out that pacciamate comes pacciamatura (mulching).
so, check the italian wikipedia
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacciamatura (and you have the english version too)
then http://www.google.it/search?q=mulching technique&ie=utf-8&oe...
hope it helps...

I'm still so amazed how 'prose' was connected to 'ridges.' Anyhow, I think even in this case - the ridges should be called 'windrows.' I haven't found a translation back to Italian of 'windrow' - so 'prose' seems reasonable.
windrow n. (plural windrows) a row of cut grain or hay allowed to dry in a field; a line of leaves etc heaped up by the wind

Andana is a likley translation from English to Italian for 'windrow.'
Translation
b>windrow composting n. (waste manag.), compostaggio in andana.
[source Hoepli's The Complete Technical Dictionary]
Example sentence:
"Il foraggio in andana viene raccolto dal raccoglitore chiamato pick-up, spostato lateralmente dalla coclea, inviato nella camera di compressione dall’infaldatore che può essere a vite oppure a o a coltello,... ." [source Wikipedia - Italian]

: In Italian you never say andana when you form a ridge of soil. Andana is typically made up of hay or grass or straw. You also have the verb *andanare* for heaping up in windrows. Think to a *voltafieno andanatore" for instance.
