Discussion

Mario Freitas Feb 22, 2016:
@ Muriel, Indeed
Muriel Vasconcellos Feb 22, 2016:
@Mario 'Strips' is too small for this context. I understand that that these are expanses as far as the eye can see. Also, 'continue' is needed later in the sentence, which is why I posted a longer phrase.
Mario Freitas Feb 21, 2016:
Meu voto Eu ficaria com o "continuous" do Robert e os "stretches" da Muriel, ou talvez "strips" também utilizados comumente em agricultura (mas implicam of formato retangular, que não está implícito no contexto).

increasing expansion of greenfield land

"There has been an increasing expansion of greenfield land in order to further agricultural production";

That's how I'd frame it; " greenfield" = land given over to agriculture; " brownfield" = land given over to urban development,

expanses of contiguous/adjacent farmland / farm plots / farmed land

Another suggestion.
Example sentence:

Plant, which will cause the Xingu River to flood great expanses of land and many members of the indigenous tribes to lose their land.

The landscape features pine-covered hills, fields of wheat, large expanses of grazing land covered with herds of cattle.
