French term

polykystose rénale plus unique dominante

French to English Medical Medical (general) medical report
Hello colleagues!

This is the indication for any MRI of the upper abdomen.

Do I understand correctly that this is polycystic kidney disease plus (including) a single dominant cyst??

I'm not sure how else I would read this.

I would appreciate your help! Thank you!

@dwt2: I like "with one dominant cyst." The only thing bothering me is what Phil brought up about cyst being masculine, but the "e" on "dominante" could certainly be an error. The term "polykystose rénale dominante" is fairly common, but that leaves the "plus unique" hanging... Please post your suggestion and we'll see if others agree.

@denise: the only other interpretation I wondered about is a translation along the lines of: "polycystic kidney disease with one dominant cyst". I can't find a ref just now but my recollection is that sometimes one cyst enlarges much more than the others.
Denise Pavao (asker) Aug 29, 2017:
If "unique dominante" referred to, say, a single gene mutation, or even "autosomal dominant" why the "plus?" And in French, autosomal dominant is "autosomique dominante." Hmm...
Denise Pavao (asker) Aug 29, 2017:
@Sue: Elsewhere in the report it does say that there are cysts in both kidneys (sorry - I should have led with that!) In two instances numerous cysts in both kidneys (and the liver) are mentioned.
The only other sentences that might help in this very short report are under Résultats: "Existence d'une multitude de kystes entreprenant le parenchyme hépatique et rénal bilatéralement. De nombreux kystes présentent un hypersignal spontané T1 correspondant soit à un kyste hémorragique soit à des kystes à riche contenu protéique."

would more context help?

Denise Pavao (asker) Aug 29, 2017:
@dwt2: I just looked up normal kidney volume (M: 110-190 mL and F: 90-150 mL). In my report, the right kidney volume is over 600 mL and the left kidney is over 400 mL, suggesting both kidneys are affected...
dwt2 Aug 29, 2017:
Could "unique" be referring to unilaterality? See this reference https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3055028/
philgoddard Aug 29, 2017:
Kyste is masculine, but it says dominante, though that doesn't necessarily prove anything.
Denise Pavao (asker) Aug 29, 2017:
Thanks Sue. I initially wondered about that, but the word order didn't seem quite right for that, and I also found examples that included "dominant cysts."
For example:

Sue Davis Aug 29, 2017:
I wonder if dominante refers to autosomal dominant http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Autosomal-dominant-polycystic-k...
might be worth a look
