Just before dusk I look across towards the highest summit in the Sierra. The air is crisp and the atmosphere sharp. The sun’s embers light a tiny white beacon, the trig point at about 960 m, what they call here a vértice geodésico, perched on the bulk of the massif. The mountain shows hints of its rocky skin, usually more or less brown, just now somewhere in the spectrum between pink and peach at this captured moment before day’s end, from among the shrubby greens of its tight pelt. Beyond the summit a single cumulo-stratus cloud, tinted peach but with just the faintest hint of salmon, drifts southwards. A minute later I look up from the compost heap to which I’m adding shredded hottentot fig and the cloud has gone, the mountain has reverted to a dull darkening shape, the day has closed.
