On the basis that you can't take with you

Homework / test English to Spanish Art/Literary Tourism & Travel travel guide
October 2007 was seriously wet. The 18th is a date etched in our diaries. We had been invited for a meal by Mary, who had suggested we go in the campervan to give ourselves the option of staying over if we wanted to have a drink. Continuing rain gave us pause for thought but we decided to chance it. This proved very wise, for the following reason. In the early 90s she and her late husband Joshua had laid down a reasonable cellar but as things turned out their stocks of wine exceeded demand. ON THE BASIS THAT YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITY YOU, Mary had extracted three bottles for the evening between five of us, including one abstemious driver in the other couple. The wines were awarded high scores by the ad-hoc panel. A decision to round the evening off with something Hungarian, virulent and bright green is best glossed over. So we slept in the campervan. It rained all night during which time, had we but known it, our earlier wise decision was beginning to look less wise.
ON THE BASIS THAT YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU MEANS ‘You can’t take the wine with you when you die so you might as well drink it now!’
CAN YOU HELP?

Dado que uno no puede llevarse el vino consigo (cuando muere/al morir), Mary había extraído tres botellas .. ¿Qué te parece? However, I am not a native-Spanish speaker, so I will leave the final rendering up to the native speakers. Regards.

THE WINE The point about the wine was that Mary, who had created the cellar, i.e. the overambitious wine collection, couldn't take it with her, so she got out more bottles than she might have done if she hadn't had an excessive amount in the cellar.
