This is an academic paper about equity issues, and they are talking about their methodology:
Thus, to avoid the endogeneity problem, we introduced an unobservable heterogeneity component into the panel-data models. This component enabled us to control individual characteristics that are not observable, or not identified by investors, but which could be correlated with the residue employed as proxy of discretion. So models are estimated with a fixed effects approach.
Does anyone know if proxy of discretion is correct? I only found one hit on the internet, and that's from the paper I'm proof-reading!!
thanks

My understanding is that here 'discretion' is being used in a specific sense in the context of the paper to mean something like 'ability to choose' or 'tendency to act according to one's own desire' (related to the phrases 'power of descretion' or 'at your own discretion', and the residue is used as a representative (proxy) for this quantity because it cannot be observed or measured directly.
The English is a bit strange, but not unusually so for this sort of text.
BTW, you should correct 'detection'...

Personally, I\'d say \'as a proxy for the discretion\'.
