"What?! We need to blow that thing up, not build some fancy machine."
"A functional machine. Something that works. As opposed to griefing the monster to death."
Please somebody help me understand what is supposed to mean here. I don't really get what this "griefing to death" stands for.
It's from a game script.
There are some guys who want to kill a monster. That's why one of them offers to build a special machine to help them kill it. That's all I can say about the context...

rather than continually/endlessly causing grief/distress or sabotaging
"griefing" is usually causing grief to other players online or sabotaging them so not at all sure it's the "monster" here

"to death"=endlessly rather than killing I think

if "to death" does mean "killing the monster" then "griefing" could mean causing it grief by repeatedly harassing it.
So blow it up=get rid of it permanently
Medium confidence because of lack of full context

yes, if
"Instead of annoying the monster endlessly"
then that would fit
--------------------------------------------------

oops, meant to say above
if
"Instead of annoying the monster endlessly"
fits context, then that makes sense

Good! Glad it makes sense!

So "repeatedly/endlessly harassing the monster" is probably best then

Note from asker:
Yes, I believe "repeatedly" is the key point here. Instead of pissing the monster off on and on and on... until it probably dies. :) |

Что-то, что действительно сработает, а не просто доведет монстра до истерики:)
кажется, неплохой вариант:)

2. In online gaming where one repeatedly killing the same individual or individuals over and over again, or camping their corpse to prevent them from retrieving it, or otherwise performing actions in a game to prevent the player from enjoying the game.

So am I right in understanding that the whole sentence means something like "Instead of annoying the monster endlessly"?
