English term
mid-teen ROE
English
Bus/Financial
Investment / Securities
Ver Explanation/ Context
Context: banking sector.
The sentence reads as follows.
... redefining the business model in order to generate mid-teen returns on equity.
I am not sure whether here mid-teen means a RoE between 15% and 17% (since teens are the numbers 13 through 19) or rather a RoE of 14%-15%, as 14 and 15 appear to be also a common interpretation of "mid teens"...
Thanks in advance for your help!

RoE midway between 10 and 19
Generally, "teen" means 13-19 inclusive when applied to age and 10-19 inclusive when applied to other things, such as percentage rates. This is explained explicitly in the American Heritage Dictionary, for example:
"1. teens
a. The numbers 10 through 19 or 13 through 19.
b. The 10th through 19th items, in a series or scale: The temperature was in the low teens.
c. The 13th through 19th years of a person or animal's life: students in their teens.

Examples from financial texts that allow you to put a figure to "low teen" or "mid teen" tend to support this:
"Now, let me provide you with the guidance for the third quarter of 2011. Revenue will show a low-teen percentage range, about 10% to 12% decline, mostly driven by lower volume."

"Visa (V) Continues Mid-Teen Growth Rate in Q4, But Investors Sell
[...] The credit-card processing giant reported GAAP quarterly net income rose 14 percent to $880 million [...]
Revenue in the quarter rose 13 percent to $2.4 billion"

Note from asker:
Dear Liz, I had opted for 14 to 17, and, in the end another translator of the same text into a different language asked the client and apparently, they meant midway between 13 and 16. So your reference was closer to their use of this (certainly vague) expression. Thanks! |
