English term

We are working to be number one in the market

English Art/Literary Linguistics
Dear Pros,

As you'll realize, I'm not an English native speaker, so prepositions are sometimes quite a problem. What would the best one to use in that sentence: IN the market or ON the market?

Thank you all.

I would always say \'in the market\'.

agree Mools : My general rule of thumb is that 'on the market' means 'for sale', whereas 'in the market' usually refers to competing for something...

Nah, I am the Devil buahaaha!
neutral Ian M-H (X) : This is occasionally encountered but not as natural sounding, to my UK ears at least, as "in". Confidence level 5 without an explanation or reference for Asker seems excessive.

I am not sure how confidence level has anything to do with an explanation. I can be sure of the fact that "Yes" is a word, without explaining that. As for references, I would imagine the asker has already looked at both versions on google him/herself?

we are "striving" to be number one in the market

change the verb and the sentence is ok...same meaning

Striving to be Number One
Peer comment(s):

agree Robert Donahue (X) : working or striving works. Striving is a little sexier sounding though.

thanks...(:>)..perhaps more "goal setting" vs. "working on being (becoming) number one
