Thanks Rahi !
Fan Gao Sep 20, 2006:
Excuse the spelling mistakes: "designated" and "could be a typo"
Fan Gao Sep 20, 2006:
Hi, I've agreed with Anna Maria as I also think it's just the deisgnated name for the ward but I also wonder if instead of "Acom" it's actually "Acorn". With some fonts the "r" and the "n" together could look very much like an 'm" so it could by typo.

Probably named after a doctor or someone to do with the hospital.

anterior communicating artery

I wouldn't be surprised that the ward's name originates from the commonly used acronym of the above.

Joint Forces Command (Formerly ACOM)

Is this a war story?

Joint Forces Command was also known as Allied Comand (ACOM). If the period is WW II, we are looking at an Allied Command Hospital Ward.
Note from asker:
Please read the question again, the category is "medical" so no war stories!

acorn

Another reason that made me think of acorn was that I once had a stay in hospital and I was in "Willow" ward. This hospital had its wards named after trees so it probably had an "acorn" ward there too.
