a concentration of shots, by guns or canons or rockets
which pin the enemy down and make it impossible for him to attack or take otherwise action. In other words, such heavy firing of arms is disabling the enemy.

: my understanding is that that is 'suppression/suppressive fire', while disabling fire (causes damage which) stops a land/sea target manoeuvring (as the jargon happens to be,although Swiss's conclusion was entirely logical :-)
