take your point - but neither question nor context specifies a knock-out tournament - that is inferred by other answerers from the group round - it could be for a wde variety of sports where 16 competitors or teams go on to the final(s) round(s)

but aim was to help asker understand the term, not necessarily use it much, so it can still help if he knows the continental usage

semi quarter final

That is, the rpund before quarter final. Just like semi final is the round before the final.
