Flemish term

eindverhandeling tweede of derde cyclus

Flemish to English Other Education / Pedagogy
Prijs Ontwikkelingssamenwerking
Deze jaarlijkse aanmoedigingsprijs is bestemd voor studenten en jonge onderzoekers uit België en uit ontwikkelingslanden. De prijs bekroont wetenschappelijke werken die een bijdrage leveren tot kennis die kan worden ingezet voor de ontwikkeling in het Zuiden. De prijzen worden toegekend op basis van een **eindverhandeling tweede of derde cyclus**, een doctoraatsthesis of een publicatie in een wetenschappelijk tijdschrift.

Found a website that translates this as "final papers for graduate diplomas", but that doesn't sound very convincing to me. "Final papers for first degrees" or something? Not that familiar with the Belgian university system so not sure that's what it really means.

Yes, it looks like one of those translations that have become "ingeburgerd". Since the client here actually organises the Prize and is just as guilty of using the Bachelor's phrase, I'm afraid I'm stuck with it - though BEWARE anyone who subsequently looks at this question!
Paul Peeraerts Sep 16, 2005:
You get the first main degree after three years. So I suppose the translation is wrong. See: "Volgens het Bachelor-Masterstelsel (of BaMa) is de duur van een universitaire bacheloropleiding zowel in Nederland als in Vlaanderen drie jaar."

Point taken and the site I mentioned confirms what you're saying (http://devcoprize.africamuseum.be./nl/voorstel.htm "Zij kunnen meedingen naar een prijs op basis van een eindverhandeling op het niveau van licentie of post-graduaat (2e of 3e cyclus)"). However, this site also contains the official rules for the competition (http://devcoprize.africamuseum.be./en/regulati.htm). Translation used there may be wrong of course, but the phrase "minimum of four years of university studies" makes it clear, I feel. To me that suggests a first main degree. VUB site about the Prize is one of several I've found that also use the same solution.
Paul Peeraerts Sep 16, 2005:
??? No! Bachelor's thesis is "eerste cyclus" and Master's thesis is "tweede cyclus".

Proposed translations

Selected

final paper for master and postgraduate diplomas

De tweede cyclus is wat vroeger de "licentie" werd genoemd, en nu het "master" diploma. De derde cyclus is de postgraduaatscyclus, nu ook wel "master-na-masteropleidingen" genoemd.

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks for the explanation, though I went with quite a different phrase in the end. Found a site that explained the rules of the competition where it was mentioned that candidates can compete for a prize by submitting either a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis (minimum of four years of university studies), a PhD thesis or a publication in a scientific journal. So I based my translation on that. Thanks again."
