français term

épaufrure

français vers anglais Technique / Génie Construction / génie civil pont en caisson
This comes from a legal dispute about bridge damage and who pays what.

"Par ailleurs, nous avons noté votre remarque concernant le caisson endommagé en rive avale du pont.

Il s’agit d’une **épaufrure du béton**, pouvant être réparée par simple ragréage sans remplacement du caisson."

Difficulties

Hard to be precise without more knowledge. Epaufrure is often used in reference to damage caused by knocks, as is spalling though in principle it is a specific kind of damage caused by penetration of chloride ions causing reinforcement to rust and expand, thereby breaking off surface plates of concrete from the inside; it can also be the result of insufficiently dense or sealed concrete and penetration of water which later freezes and breaks off pieces of concrete, again from the inside.

Your client might not want to suggest that his concrete is inferior or that the reinforcement is too close to the surface (whether it is or not) and something that is confined to "mechanical damage" caused by rough handling, say, might be preferable.

Hard to know what is best without fuller context, but "chipped" sounds rather less incriminating - and puts the onus on some intermediary - than "spalled"

Peer comment(s):

disagree Bourth (X) : Excellent as it is, in French, Dicobat is disappointing when it comes to its English proposals / I take that back to some extent, seeing that Dicobat actually proposes splintering, bruising and spalling./It's more a question of having the broader view.

Thanks, Bourth, I don't see such a huge difference between "splinter" and "chipping" to justify a disagree, but you are unquestionably the master here!

* e.g. spalling - without actually saying as much.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Bourth (X) : "Defect" is a dangerous thing to own up to in a legal battle./Touché, maître!

I proposed it as a broader view! Minor defect(s) then?
