French term

la centrale

French to English Law/Patents Law (general) prison terminology
de violents affrontements se déroulent, notamment à *la centrale de la prison* de Toul

This is from a historical text concerning radical politics in the early seventies and prison riots. As I understand it *la centrale* is a central administration unit within a prison, but this is a bit of a guess. Am I right? What would the prison slang be (preferably US)?

Discussion

Graham macLachlan Jun 18, 2008:
"la centrale de la prison" gets 1 Ghit, perhaps the author wanted to say "prison centrale" which gets 42,300 (pertinent) Ghits

prison (for offenders with sentences of more than two years)

It's in Hachette/Oxford and the text below is quite clear:

Le 5 décembre 1971 éclate à la Centrale Ney de Toul une mutinerie.
Depuis quelques jours en effet, la tension s’est accrue dans cet établissement.

Note from asker:
Thanks for all this, light is beginning to dawn - just goes to show it is always best to get a clear idea of the thing itself before jumping to the translation. That said, if *centrale* is a prison, then is the *centrale de la prison de Toul* is prison within a prison, for heavier offenders? Would there be a particular term for that?

Thanks Juan
disagree Jennifer Levey : 'station' in your webref is a verb (= 'to position', 'put in place' --> 'deploy his prison guards around the jail') and is not part of a noun phrase 'penitentiary station'.//The only thing wrong with the webref is that it doesn't support your answer.

Well, the webref is wrong. But not the translation.

I guess that the "violents affrontements" of the source text are more likely to take place in the exercise yard, but I confess that I have no personal experience of such things :)

Maybe other Proziens can give us an 'insider's' opinion...?

Hello,

I think this is referring to the courtyard of the prison, which is always centrally located (I think so).

I hope this helps.

Prison

The definition of "la centrale" in the monolingual dictionary "le petit Larousse" is: Centrale=Prison centrale, the phrase "la centrale de la prison" is somewhat inappropriate, I think it's only a French style of telling things, I mean "HYPERBOLE" and "REDONDANCE", often used in French, and particularly present in ancient texts (literature, legal documents etc...
Prison, not jail...
Note from asker:
It turns out you're probably right, but I am loathe to "correct" an ST assuming it is somehow in the wrong - this one is written by a well respected contemporary academic, so I guess he has a reason for expressing himself this way. It's not an ancient text in any case, though I see what you were thinking.

the main building of Toul Prison

http://web.ifrance.com/actu/france/160696

From this article about Toul it seems that it is indeed a "prison within a prison" as you concluded.
Note from asker:
Thank you slightly belatedly for this. The article is not quite as specific as we'd like though is it!! Now we know there is accommodation for guards outside the "centrale", but that still doesn't really clarify if that means outside the jail compound, or outside a central block within the compound (if you follow me!). Thanks though!
