français term

fistule arterio-veineuse

français vers anglais Médecine Médecine : soins de santé hospital pre-transplant report
This would appear to be 'arterio-venous fistula', but the translation given in the GDT is 'arterio-venous aneurysm'.
Can anyone explain why this would be?(if it is correct)
Context:
'Elle a eu la confection d'une fistule arterio-veineuse'

Discussion

Drmanu49 May 16, 2006:
Sorry, I thought it was clear from my answers (definitions) that fistule could not be translated as aneurysm. There are similitudes in part of the meaning as accurately pointed out by Sue but I would never use one word for the other.
Dr Sue Levy (X) May 16, 2006:
In fact, "fistule a-v" is used a synonym for aneurysm in French and English, but in specific conditions such as the congenital vein of Galen aneurysm AKA cerebral a-v fistula, which is not really an aneurysm but an AV malformation.
Dr Sue Levy (X) May 16, 2006:
On the other hand, in an AV aneurysm there is a communication between the arterial and venous systems.
Dr Sue Levy (X) May 16, 2006:
As far as I know, fistule a-v can never be translated as aneurysm. The GDT entry is wrong. GDT, Termium and especially Eurodicautom are quite unreliable for medical translation IMO.
Dr Sue Levy (X) May 16, 2006:
It's an AV fistula which is created for to provide vascular access for haemodialysis. http://www.pediatriconcall.com/fordoctor/DiseasesandConditio...

Note from asker:
Thank you DrManu49, but this does not really answer my question. I too am well aware of what these terms mean. I was merely asking if there was any situation where 'fistule' in French could be translated as 'aneurysm' in English. It seems perhaps not.
