: not accidental which suggests merely unintentional but accident as in "in the event of an accident"

Well, if the text is referring to testing of materials that have already been subjected to a pseudo "accidental event" to check their resistance to perform in the event of a real event, then you are probably right to doubt my suggestion. Thanks anyway:)
