French term

belle a peu agitee

French to English Other Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Seems to be idiomatic. The context is what to do in the event of a shipwreck, etc.

"Si la mer est belle a peu agitee..."

L'échelle de l'état de la mer...
Les deux premiers degrés désignent une mer "calme", mais qui, au degré 0, est complètement dépourvue de vagues (mer "sans rides", hauteur nulle) alors qu'au degré 1 des "rides" — des vagues de hauteur pouvant aller jusqu'à 10 cm inclus — font leur apparition (mer "ridée"). Au degré 2, la mer devient "belle" en se couvrant de "vaguelettes", c'est-à-dire de vagues dont la hauteur excède 10 cm et peut aller jusqu'à 50 cm inclus... au degré 3, la mer est "peu agitée" : H 1/3 excède 50 cm et peut aller jusqu'à 1,25 m ;

The WMO sea state code gives:
2 Smooth (wavelets) 0.1 to 0.5 m
3 Slight 0.5 to 1.25 m

The Beaufort scale doesn't use a sea state code.

agree Tony M : Ah, well found! OK, I withdraw my suggestion of 'calm', clearly wrong! // I see we're all wallowing in the wave-trough of nostalgia now! Ah yes, those childhood evenings in reverent hush, we lived on a boat, battery radio, Dad intent...

smooth to a little/somewhat rough

It's the term from the "météo marine". It should be "à peu agitée".

I've put low confidence level as I'm unsure if there are other exact terms (smooth and rough are everyday speak, but may not be appropriate, depending on context).

Cheers, Jocelyne.

"Calm to somewhat choppy" is another option, as suggested by Tony-Dusty below.

Thank you Francis!
agree Tony M : I think you might find 'choppy' is the appropriate nautical equivalent for 'peu agitée'; I'm confident about the term, less so about the equivalence... In the light of MacTrad's research, my suggestion of 'calm' is clearly wrong
