French term

(l'art du) bourdon

French to English Tech/Engineering Textiles / Clothing / Fashion
In reference to a well-know textile company

I have found this definition in GDT (no translation) under Art!
"Point de broderie exécuté sur un fort bourrage pour orner de petites surfaces ou pour broder des vides de petites dimensions (peut être fait à la main où à la machine)."

I don't know much about embroidery stitches, so any help would be appreciated.

bourdon embroidery

The term is not translated in English. From what I can recall, it refers to embroidery which creates a 3-D effect by laying thick threads or other packing material as 'stuffing' under the embroidery threads.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Mediamatrix. Although Claire is right to remind us that this is in fact Satin Stitch, I think that this choice suits the upmarket tone of the document. "

bourdon stitch explained!

Sorry, I've borrowed the title of the web page for my transaltion but basically Bourdon stitch seems to be a name for a collection of stitches -see the refs below:
Bourdon Stitching Explained
'A close, narrow row of decorative raised stitching such as a monogram, finished edge or accent'.
http://www.textileglossary.com/terms/bourdon-stitching.html
and
'It was very popular in the 1940s to embroider ones initials onto household linen—dinner napkins, sheets, and towels, and also onto handkerchiefs. This was done in two basic styles—tiny cross stitch (often done in redwork) and satin stitch (often in white on white or a pale color like light blue or pink). Some examples of monograms:

'Accent stitch – an embroidery stitch which is mainlyused to provide a splash of colour in an otherwise flat or monotone area'

Thanks Cervin for that extra information.

satin stitch [a specific type of narrow, satin stitching with an even width]

While it isn't unusual to see bourdon in English texts, we do refer to this stitch as satin stitch, and we are not as specific as the French. "Le point de bourdon" specifies a narrow form of satin stitch with an even width that forms a narrow, stitched ridge similar to piping. Compare to "plumetis," which is a padded satin stitch that is used for shapes, as opposed to the lines formed by "bourdon." As I said, we don't narrow it down as finely as French does, so satin stitch is the correct term.

Thanks Claire, and sorry for not having found those previous references. I often wonder about the Kudoz search engine!
