A clearer description http://www.das-baulexikon.de/lexikon/Einhaus.htm

Eindachhof Thanks a lot for your link and the get around, Ramey. This is a much more English way of translating it; rather than trying to create a long compound noun.
Ramey Rieger (X) Jan 5, 2018:
Get around View the 6 fully furnished classic Black Forest homes, where dwelling and barn were found/built under one long roof.
Stephen Old (asker) Jan 5, 2018:
Thanks for this link, Ramey. It seems that the point here is that the roof of an Eindachhhaus has a continuous ridge line . I amnot sure what use I should make of this knowledge yet: Der Eindachhof (häufig auch Einfirsthof) besteht im Wesentlichen aus einem Gebäude mit durchlaufender Firstlinie, dem Einhaus. Konstruktion und Raumaufteilung können dabei sehr unterschiedlich sein:

If you do choose "byre dwelling", I think you need to (a) add a few words of explanation, because its meaning is not immediately clear, and (b) take out the hyphen.
Sarah Lewis-Morgan Jan 2, 2018:
seehand I agree too. Have found this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byre-dwelling
Ramey Rieger (X) Jan 2, 2018:
@seehand byre-dwelling is delightful!
seehand Jan 2, 2018:
byre-dwelling could be a way to translate it - "typical Black Forest one-roof farm house" perhaps another ...
Sarah Lewis-Morgan Jan 2, 2018:
Thanks, Ramey That makes sense. So in GB English my ideas are possible - "homestead" is more US usage and I presume GB is what is required here.
Ramey Rieger (X) Jan 2, 2018:
Hi Sarah It is typical German or Swiss, energy-saving, life-saving, practical in the winter, when farmers didn't have to leave the house to tend the animals.
Sarah Lewis-Morgan Jan 2, 2018:
Looking at that Wiki entry, perhaps "single-roof yard" or "single-roof farm" would be more appropriate in GB English. But I can't think of a common term that is in use.

one-roof housebarn

The roof part might be important.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Housebarn
A housebarn (also house-barn or house barn) is a building that is a combination of a house and a barn...
Housebarns in Germany are generally called an einhaus (single-house or "all-in-one house"), eindachhof (one-roof-house) or wohnstallhaus (residential barn house)...
The Black Forest house group are found in southwest Germany in the black forest region and include:

The Lutze Housebarn was built in 1849 by Gottlieb and Fredericka Lutze. The building is dual house and barn under one roof in the Old World German Tradition.

I prefer "Hausbarn," if that's an option. I only see one usage of this, but it's convincing.

http://germanhausbarn.com/iowa_attractions/german-hausbarn/
Brought over from Germany and assembled here in Manning in 1996, the German Hausbarn is the pride and joy of the Manning Community Foundation.
The Hausbarn is a unique structure in that it consists of living quarters not only for the family, with bedrooms, sitting, dining and cooking areas, but also areas for housing livestock, farm equipment and feed. Everything under one roof!

Probably don't need to focus on the roof, unless you are contrasting with a Paarhof or Zweiseithof, etc. Even then, "housebarn" only refers to an Einhof (one building divided into living and livestock quarters). I do recommend some explanation, if it's not clear from the rest of the text, as it is probably a foreign concept for tourists, maybe with "(all) under one roof."

agree Michael Martin, MA : Or one-roof farmhouse: https://www.cyclifier.org/project/vernacular-farm/

Thanks, Michael. Nice reference. Not sure why, but I think of "farmhouse" as a house *on* a farm.
agree seehand : already suggested the "one-roof farmhouse"

Thanks, seehand. I'm recommending "Hausbarn" or one of the short descriptions above. If you'd like to post a separate answer, both "one-roof farmhouse" and "byre-dwelling" seem popular.
agree Armorel Young : "housebarn" is the term that's needed ("one-roof" is then superfluous) - "farmhouse" doesn't do it imo, because it implies accommodation for people but not animals

Thanks, Armorel. Yes, "housebarn" is concise and self-explanatory and IMO has a German-like charm :)
agree Björn Vrooman : Ingenious design. I quote: "The heat from livestock kept the house warm..." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Seitaniemi_Housebarn That is, if you can stand the smell?

Thanks! Idk Might blend nicely with Sauerkraut-making aromas ;)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This is a difficult term to translate but I think this is the best option. Housebarn/hausbarn seems to be quite common in the US. I will add a phrase like "where people live at one end and animals at the other. "

single-roofed farmyard

Low German house - Wikipedia
Because this type of farm combines living quarters, stalls and hay storage under one roof it is also described as an Einhaus ("single house" or "all-in-one house") and the attached farmyard as an Eindachhof ("single-roofed farmyard").

neutral Ramey Rieger (X) : Not very sociable, I've posted single-roof in the discussion box nearly a half hour ago.

agree philgoddard : To make it clearer, I suggest: "Eindachhaus, or single-roof farmhouse, in which humans and animals lived under one roof". Not "yard", though, which by definition is outdoors.

Thanks! Should you post "single-roof farmhouse", then you have my "agree".
