German term

Restholz

German to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation Biofuel power plant
From a job concerning a biofuels power plant, the term Restholz (as opposed to Altholz) comes up. Ernst gives the latter but not the former. Can I take it to mean this is wood from coppiced supplies, or rather is it used, or recycled, (whatever that means!)?

TIA

"Kesselanlage
Hochdruck/Dampf: 47 bar/430 °C
Erzeugungsleistung: ca. 21,5 t/h
Brennstoff (Alt- und Restholz): ca. 40.000 t/a"

Discussion

Colin Rowe May 20, 2009:
Context Given the context: "Brennstoff (Alt- und Restholz): ca. 40.000 t/a", "Stücke" would seem more likely than sawdust. If they only meant sawdust, they would presumably have said so. If they mean pieces of wood or a combination of pieces and sawdust, then either "scrap wood" or "wood scrap" should do.

"Altholz" would certainly be in pieces, rather than powder.
Alan Johnson May 20, 2009:

residual and waste wood

... as another choice. Very common description in the context of biomass heating plant fuel.
Note from asker:
Thanks Bernd. If it's a term in widespread industry use, I'm liking it.

agree Colin Rowe : Your suggestions do indeed google very nicely in conjunction with biomass. What would your sugestion be to distinguish "Altholz"?

Thank you, Colin. Maybe "used wood".

scrap wood / off-cuts

i.e. bits left over / surplus, rather than old/used.

A possible alternative to "scrap wood" would be "wood scrap". This might better accommodate the possibility of sawdust.
