German term

(Kunststoff)Flaces

German to English Law/Patents Materials (Plastics, Ceramics, etc.) reuseable filter material for liquid / gaseous fuels

My current thinking is 'flakes'.
All help appreciated.

Alison MacG Apr 16, 2012:
@ jyxxer Thanks for that info. Paragraph [0007] would appear to confirm that "flakes" is indeed what is intended here:

Sorting and Granulation
Before reclamation begins, used PET products are crushed into bales and sold to a material recovery company. The first stage in a typical PET plastic reclamation procedure involves sorting the different types of resin in order to group them together. After they have been sorted, the plastic products are ground into particles whose size depends on the particular processing method that will be used on them. These resin granules are referred to as “flakes,” and will serve as the base forming material for future products.

I don't know why they chose that particular spelling, but there are certainly quite a few German hits for "Cornflaces".

@ Colin I am now inclined to agree with you, as I said in my response to Helen. I can't find this patent at all, but I'm sure it would be really helpful to read the rest of the document and know the applicant, classification, etc. to obtain further clues and/or clarification, if necessary from other patents in the same name, etc. For example, why "Flaces" rather than, say, "Flocken"? Is this German version perhaps already a translation from some other language?
Colin Rowe Apr 16, 2012:
I am inclined to assume "flakes" here. Given that this is a new procedure, "Vlies" can be ruled out, as this was one of the the previous methods:

Spelling does not appear to be the author's strong point...

Kunststoffvlies

My guess is that this is some sort of transcription error.

agree Helen Shiner : Yes, I do remember briefly wondering about that, but then was distracted by something else. I should have come back to query it. Absolutely agree, research via patents is the way forward.

Thanks, Helen, but I've now noticed "Kunstoff[f]lies" (line 5), suggesting this is something different, possibly indeed flakes. I would like to be able to see the whole patent, incl. applicant's name, to allow for relevant patent searching in this field
