I définitely agree: no more no less, not better or worse, just different

My short answer to this question is "different" too. I didn't work as a translator before becoming a freelancer. I was working as an engineer for big companies. There was the stress, and the thrill, of working to meet objectives. I also particularly disliked the political wheeling and dealing by bosses and colleagues. However, as a freelancer, the main stress for me comes from the isolation of working from home when I have problems with a translation, especially with short deadlines.

Many freelancers say their professional stress is in the lack of job security and having to hunt for assignments every day. If this is the case, either you've not been doing something right, or you are too early to throw the towel in - it takes about three years of dedicated work to get established in freelancing, and then you just get a steady stream of work. Many freelancers say their professional stress is in the lack of job security and having to hunt for assignments every day. If this is the case, either you've not been doing something right, or you are too early to throw the towel in - it takes about three years of dedicated work to get established in freelancing, and then you just get a steady stream of work. Of course, being a freelancer requires a lot of additional professional skills compared to working for a company, and a lot more responsibility, and probably a bit of financial cushion (enough money to survive a "dry season" of 2-3 months with very little or no work). If you have that, your professional stress as a freelancer will be much lower than in a company. Personally, I would not consider being employed unless they offer me 150-200% of what I earn on my own.Collapse

I'd forgotten about the "wheeling and dealing" aspect of working in an office. Office politics can be really difficult to manages sometimes.

I would say it's a balancing act between stress and reward. Personally I find freelance work much more rewarding; every achievement big and small brings personal satisfaction. Every word you translate and every decision you make affects your career and your business directly and there is nothing like making progress as a result of your decisions and hard work. It can be an added stress but the rewards are much bigger, if you ask me.

As a freelance you don't have stress, because you always know where you are standing at, on the work side, although it may be cause for stress to our families, specially in my case, because I tend to be very strict with my schedules. I can program surprise dinners or meals, but no one can do the same for me, since I have already made my day agenda (to avoid stress). So I think the only cause of stress in my case is when someone tries to alter my schedule.
