Part 1
I was a wonderful parent before I had children. I was an expert on why everyone else was having problems with theirs. Then I had three of my own.
Living with real children can be humbling. Every morning I would tell myself, "Today is going to be different," and every morning was a variation of the one before: "You gave her more than me!" . . . "That's the pink cup. I want the blue cup." . . . "This oatmeal looks like throw-up." . . . "He punched me." . . . "I never touched him!" . . . "I won't go to my room. You're not the boss of me!"
They finally wore me down. And though it was the last thing I ever dreamed I'd be doing, I joined a parent group. The group met at a local child-guidance center and was led by a young psychologist, Dr. Haim Ginott.
The meeting was intriguing. The subject was "children's feelings," and the two hours sped by. I came home with a head spinning with new thoughts and a notebook full of undigested ideas:
// Direct connection between how kids feel and how they behave.
// When kids feel right, they'll behave right.
// How do we help them to feel right?
// By accepting their feelings!
// Problem--Parents don't usually accept their children's feelings. For example:
"You don't really feel that way."
"You're just saying that because you're tired."

After that session I remember thinking, "Maybe other parents do that. I don't." Then I started listening to myself. Here are some sample conversations from my home--just from a single day.
Child: Mommy, I'm tired.
Me: You couldn't be tired. You just napepd.
Child: (louder) But I'm tired.
Me: You're not tired. You're just a little sleepy. Let's get dressed.
Child: (wailing) No, I'm tired!
Child: Mommy, it's hot in here.
Me: It's cold. Keep your sweater on.
Child: No, I'm hot.
Me: I said, "Keep your sweater on!"
Child: No, I'm hot.
Child: That TV show was boring.
Me: No, it wasn't. It was very interesting.
Child: It was stupid.
Me: It was educational.
Child: It stunk.
Me: Don't talk that way!
Can you see what was happening? Not only were all our conversations turning into arguments, I was also telling my children over and over again not to trust their own perceptions but to rely on mine instead.
Once I was aware of what I was doing, I was determined to change. But I wasn't sure how to go about it. What finally helped me most was actually putting myself in my children's shoes. I asked myself, "Suppose I were a child who was tired, or hot or bored? And suppose I wanted that all-important grown-up in my life to know what I was feeling...?"
Over the next weeks I tried to tune in to what I thought my children might be experiencing, and when I did, my words seemed to follow naturally. I wasn't just using a technique. I really meant it when I said, "So you're still feeling tired--even though you just napped." Or "I'm cold, but for you it's hot in here." Or "I can see you didn't care much for that show." After all, we were two separate people, capable of having two different sets of feelings. Neither of us was right or wrong. We each felt what we felt.
For a while, my new skill was a big help. There was a noticeable reduction in the number of arguments between the children and me. Then one day my daughter announced, "I hate Grandma," and it was //my mother// she was talking about. I never hesitated for a second. "That is a terrible thing to say," I snapped. "You know you don't mean it. I don't ever want to hear that coming out of your mouth again."
That little exchange taught me something else about myself. I could be very accepting about most of the feelings the children had, but let one of them tell me something that made me angry or anxious and I'd instantly revert to my old way.
I've since learned that my reaction was not that unusual. On the following page you'll find examples of other statements children make that often lead to an automatic denial from their parents. Please read each statement and jot down what you think a parent might say if he were denying his child's feelings.
I. Child: I don't like the new baby.
Parent: (denying the feeling)
II. Child: I had a dumb birthday party. (After you went "all out" to make it a wonderful day.)
Parent: (denying the feeling)
III. Child: I'm not wearing this stupid retainer anymore. It hurts. I don't care what the orthodontist says!
Parent: (denying the feeling)
IV. Child: I hate that new coach! Just because I was one minute late he kicked me off the team.
Parent: (denying the feeling)
Did you find yourself writing things like:
"That's not so. I know in your heart you really love the baby."
"What are you talking about? You had a wonderful party--ice cream, birthday cake, balloons. Well, that's the last party you'll ever have!"
"Your retainer can't hurt that much. After all the money we've invested in your mouth, you'll wear that thing whether you like it or not!"
"You have no right to be mad at the coach. It's your fault. You should have been on time."
Somehow this kind of talk comes easily to many of us. But how do children feel when they hear it?

Jag var en fantastisk förälder innan jag fick barn. Jag var en expert på varför alla andra hade problem med sina. Sedan fick jag tre egna.
Att leva med riktiga barn kan göra en ödmjuk. Varje morgon sa jag för mig själv, "Idag kommer vara annorlunda," och varje morgon var en variation av dagen före: "Du gav henne mer än mig!" . . . "Det där är den rosa muggen. Jag vill ha den blå muggen." . . . "Den här gröten ser ut som en spya." . . . "Han slog mig." . . . "Jag rörde honom inte!" . . . "Jag tänker inte gå till mitt rum. Du bestämmer inte över mig!"
Till slut klarade jag inte mer. Och trots att det var det sista jag någonsin hade drömt om att göra så började jag gå på föräldrakurser. Gruppen träffades på ett närliggande center för barnhälsa och leddes av en ung psykolog vid namn Dr Haim Ginott.
Mötet väckte många tankar. Ämnet var "barns känslor" och de två timmarna flög förbi. Jag kom hem med huvudet fullt av nya tankar och ett anteckningsblock fullt av ofärdiga idéer:

"Det finns ingen anledning att vara upprörd."
// Att ständigt få sina känslor nekade kan förvirra och förarga barn. Det lär dem också att //inte// veta hur de känner sig--att inte lita på sina känslor.
Efter mötet minns jag att jag tänkte, "Andra föräldrar kanske gör sådär, men inte jag." Sedan började jag lyssna på mig själv. Här följer några samtal från mitt hem--från bara en enda dag.
Barn: Mamma, jag är trött.
Jag: Du kan inte vara trött, du har ju precis sovit middag.
Barn: (högre) Men jag är trött.
Jag: Du är inte trött. Du är bara lite sömnig. Dags att klä på sig.
Barn: (gnäller) Nej, jag är trött!
Barn: Mamma, det är varmt här.
Jag: Det är kallt. Behåll tröjan på.
Barn: Nej, jag är varm.
Jag: Jag sa, "Behåll tröjan på!"
Barn: Nej, jag är varm.
Barn: Det där TV-programmet var tråkigt.
Jag: Nej, det var det inte. Det var väldigt intressant.
Barn: Det var dumt.
Jag: Det var utbildande.
Barn: Det sög.
Jag: Så säger man inte!
Kan du se vad som hände? Inte nog med att alla våra samtal förvandlades till bråk, jag sa dessutom till mina barn om och om igen att de inte skulle lita på sina egna uppfattningar utan förlita sig på mina istället.
Nu när jag var medveten om vad jag gjorde beslöt jag mig för att förändra det. Men jag var inte säker på hur jag skulle göra. Det som äntligen hjälpte mig mest var att faktiskt sätta mig in i barnens perspektiv. Jag frågade mig själv, "Om jag var ett barn som var trött eller varmt eller uttråkat. Och om jag ville att den där viktiga vuxna i mitt liv skulle veta hur jag kände mig...?
De närmaste veckorna försökte jag föreställa mig vad mina barn gick igenom, och när jag gjorde det så kom sig orden naturligt. Det var inte det att jag använde mig av en metod. Jag menade det verkligen när jag sa, "Så du känner dig fortfarande trött--även fast du nyss sov middag." Eller "Jag är kall, men för dig är det varmt här inne." Eller "Jag märker att du inte gillade det där TV-programmet." Vi var ju trots allt två olika människor, kapabla till att ha två olika uppsättningar med känslor. Ingen av oss hade rätt eller fel. Vi kände det vi kände.
Ett tag var min nya färdighet till stor nytta. Antalet bråk reducerades kraftigt mellan barnen och mig. Så plötligt en dag annonserade min dotter, "Jag hatar mormor," och det var //min mamma// hon pratade om. Jag tveckade inte en sekund. "Det där är en hemsk sak att säga," sa jag skarpt. "Du vet att du inte menar det. Jag vill aldrig höra dig säga det där igen."
Det korta samtalet lärde mig något nytt om mig själv. Jag kunde acceptera väldigt många av mina barns känslor, men så fort någon av dem sa något som gjorde mig arg eller ängslig så föll jag genast tillbaka in i gamla mönster.
Sedan dess har jag lärt mig att min reaktion inte var särskilt ovanlig. På följande sidor kommer du få fler exempel på påståenden barn kan yttra som ofta leder till att deras föräldrar automatiskt nekar deras känslor. Läs varje påstående och anteckna vad du tror att en förälder skulle säga om han nekade sitt barns känslor.

III. Barn: Jag tänker inte använda den här dumma tandställningen längre. Den gör ont. Jag bryr mig inte om var tandläkaren säger!
Förälder: (förnekar känslan)
IV. Barn: Jag hatar den nya tränaren! Bara för att jag var en minut sen så sparkade han mig från laget.
Förälder: (förnekar känslan)
Märkte du att du skrev saker som:
"Så är det inte alls. Jag vet att du älskar bebisen innerst inne."
"Vad pratar du om? Du hade ett fantastiskt kalas--glass, tårta, ballonger. Jaha, det var det sista kalaset du får ha!"
"Så ont kan väl tandställningen inte göra. Så dyrt som det har varit att ta hand om din mun så har du på dig tandställningen vare sig du vill eller inte!"
"Du har väl ingen rätt att vara arg på tränaren. Det var ju ditt fel. Du skulle ha kommit i tid."
Av någon anledning så är det väldigt lätt för många av oss att prata på det här sättet. Men hur känner sig barnen när de får höra det?

I know much about the impact of words in a small space, such as choosing the right word for a button, as well as the importance of understanding context when translating a stand-alone word.
