TRANSLATOR/PROOFREADER

Born in Paris, France, I lived there for my first 30 years. Then I moved to the States and lived there for 25 years, mainly teaching and translating and became completely bilingual. I now reside at the above address and go to France regularly.
In France I studied English, phonetics, literature and acquired translation skills at the University of Paris.
I also speak and write fluent German and can read and write Italian and Spanish.
I routinely use the computer to translate and can handle all the usual programs and whatever other software my clients require.
My areas of specialization are: Marketing, Health care, websites, technical manuals, surveys, codes of conduct, official documents, International agreements on human rights and the like and contracts.
My daily output is between 2000 and 3000 words per day, depending on the difficulty.
Altogether I have over 5 years of experience as a translator, (1968-1976 occasionally and 2005-2009 Full time). Overall I have translated millions of words.

Recent activities:

2007-2009: I have been translating VERY intensively for the last two years for Language Training Center, Transperfect, World Translations and the Language Source. I translated about half a million words in the last year alone.

2005-2007: In 2005 I went to live in France again for family reasons and lived there for 2 years. I started translating on a freelance basis over there, getting more and more jobs and becoming a full time translator very quickly.

Here are some of the translation companies I worked for as a freelance translator:
Omega translations in Strasbourg, France; Wordtrans in Washington DC; Alpha Translations, Melbourne, Florida; American Language Services, Los Angeles, California; Nelles Translation, Chicago, Illinois; Language Training Center, Indianapolis, Indiana; Transperfect Translations; the Language Source, Cleveland, Ohio, (I have done quite a lot of jobs for them over the last 2 and a half years and just recently I completed 2 huge projects of about 50,000 words); Translator4you, Indianapolis, Indiana, Able translations in Canada, and World Translations in Chicago (I did about 50 jobs for them over the last couple of years).
Altogether I have thus far translated millions of words on a variety of subjects, including marketing, company reports, Web sites, legal and contract matters, technical instructions, online surveys, and religious, political, biographical and civil rights documents.

Here are some comments on my translation work:

“Our client said that we were doing a good
job and more should be coming. I do appreciate your work. You are very easy to work with as well as
professional."

"Marylène, I looked at them briefly, and they were excellent.
Thanks again for your help. I will definitely keep you in mind for that - you are a real professional"…

“Vous avez fait un bon travail et je l'ai dit au téléphone à Laura Sosa. J'ai dit à Laura que je trouvais votre traduction très bonne. Vous écrivez très bien; C'était un texte très difficile et j'ai fait des compliments à votre ténacité lorsque j'ai parlé à Laura. Cordialement,” César ROUBEN, Ph.D – Professor Emeritus of French - Certified Translator ATA, ATIO, CTTIC

Translation of the above: “You did a good job and I told Laura Sosa when I talked to her on the phone. I told her I thought your translation was very good. You write very well. It was a very difficult text and I praised your persistence when I talked to Laura”.

Here is a summary of the rest of my professional life:

1999/2004 Translator and teacher for adults in Los Angeles, California, where I mainly taught English and grammar, and translated various texts and publications. I also did quite a lot of proofreading, in both English and in French.

1998/1999 Translator from English to French and proofreader for an organization in Los Angeles. I translated various magazine articles and speeches, and also did simultaneous translations.

1995/1998 Language teacher in Hamburg, Germany, where I
lived for 3 years, gave private lessons and taught English and French to individuals and to groups of adults. I also did translation jobs from English to French and some from German to French.

1978/1995 Teacher in Florida, USA.

Here are some of the projects I have done:

• Several diplomas and many other official documents, birth, school and marriage certificates.
• A number of Websites.
• Several long annual reports for an
international company.
• A whole book (50,000 words) published by
the World Bank.
• A 25,000 word commercial/legal text online for a
marketing company.
• Several huge online surveys for a company in Indianapolis, (around
50,OOO words), and several other similar jobs for other
companies.
• Some lengthy legal documents for American Language Services in Los Angeles, (about 40,000 words in all.)
• Several huge technical documents for a couple of different firms in Illinois.
• About two years ago I started working with Transperfect in New York and have done many projects for them, ranging from legal contracts to trade documents and online marketing.
• Several affidavits for Immigration lawyers in the US and in Canada.
• A number of biographical texts for a company in Indianapolis, Indiana.
• Different owners manuals for World Translations in Chicago.
• Most recently I translated the entire website of a roofing company, (about 40,000 words), and a complete manual on a positioner (28,000 words) for the Language Source.

As can be seen I’m already working with several companies on a regular basis. However, I would like to extend my reach and expand my activities.

Rates:
• $0.10 to $0.13 per word normally. It of course also depends on the length and difficulty of the text.
• $30 per hour for proofreading. Minimum charge; $35.

Software: I own 2 computers: A recent Mac, OSX software; and a PC with Windows Vista. And I am connected to Internet 24 hours a day with DSL. I can also use Wordfast and SDLX.

I am readily available, checking my email several times a day and I’m always willing to do any tests to demonstrate my professional ability.
