Today (January 6th) is Jack Slep’s 80th birthday. He has been a ProZ member for at least 10 years, and has been involved in translating in one form or another for about 60 years. He is an excellent translator in many fields, but in particular in petroleum engineering. His career paralleled mine in some ways. We both started as Air Force linguists - he in the USAF, I in the RAF. We found that we had that much and more in common, and have become good friends over the past few years, though ... We found that we had that much and more in common, and have become good friends over the past few years, though we have never met. Who will join me in offering him congratulations on his 80th birthday?

It's very nice to hear that both Jacks are two of the most long living translators in the industry. What a coincidence.
I didn't know that there was another Jack beside you, Mr. Doughty, but I want to congratulate Mr. Slep for his 80th birthday and at the same time also being able to carry on with his job for 50 years. And I would also like to say one more thing to Jack the topic starter, that you are also a wonder being a translator since 1953! I hope I could follow your footsteps... I'm amazed to hear that Jack Slep have continued his career in this industory for so long.

me live until I'm 81.
But then if I haven't finished
all I want to do, would you let
me stay awhile ... until I'm 82?
So many places I want to go.
So very much to see ... Do you think
you could manage to make it 83?
The world is changing very fast ...
There's so much in store ...
I'd like very much to live
until I'm 84.

But I would really like to enjoy a sunset,
and stay 'till I'm 87.
I know by then I won't be fast,
and sometimes will be late: but
it would be pleasant to be around
at 88!
I will have seen so much and had
a wonderful time, so I'm sure
that I'll be willing to leave
at 89. ... MAYBE!!!
