I never thought about it, and I actually like the idea. I see it as a filter; someone who is too lazy to do a minimum of research before asking will probably be reluctant to invest some time filling the profile.
Just some key aspects of the profile would be enough. Of course, if it isn't mandatory, those users could be tagged so that everyone is aware of his/her status; after all, paying members have the blue ribbon.

Good luck with the translating, Ángel. I hope you soon get through the rough patch. You might even get hooked on translating - that 's how I started  Then I took some training and was helped a lot by colleagues, and here I am.
Unfortunately there are not too many good translators about, but there are clients who appreciate them, so I hope you find some.
Exactly, Christine, the filtering feature was developed in response to this problem. It is the best option available for now.

I don't know how much work this would involve, but I'd suggest adding yet another category to all kinds of Members and Users: Visitors.
A Visitor would be a User who hasn't yet bothered to put any information whatsoever on their self, not even basic things such as location, language pair(s), area(s) of interest, etc. It's just a nick, no more.

I do share many critical opinions on the use of Kudoz. An asker indeed often shows that a certain subject is beyond him/her.
But in very many cases a question is posted justifiedly. As the translation profession is increasingly confronted with new developments in every conceivable field, new concepts and practices have to be dealt with, which may not already have been recorded in data bases or are not yet widely known. After all, the number of subject matters that has to be translated is not frozen and patiently waiting to be mastered in due time. It is fluid and ever expanding. Besides, contexts influence the meaning of terms. This fact can add a subtlety of meaning that can indeed provide food for extensive thought and debate. I notice that this is often the reaon why questions are posed in the Kudoz arena. But I also notice that a limited number of people can always be seen again and again as askers.
What I also notice is that answers reflect different philosophies on translation. It seems that translation is often regarded as an art with a lot flourish and fantasy instead of a discipline with the emphasis on 'discipline'. What vexes me is that there is a certain preference for flourish and fantasy, which according to the disciplined approach quite departs from the source meaning. I go for the disciplined approach, and what I consider as art is the ability to analyze the context with a broad view backed by some research.
