“It is best”? Jul 21, 2009

My point was that if there is something wrong with a question (such as mis-categorization, reversed pair, etc.) or there is a rules violation, it is best to call this to the attention of those who can effect a change in the question (e.g. edit the category, pair, and so on) or take any necessary rules enforcement.

When it’s a matter of rules enforcement, “it is best” really won’t do. If sanctions are imposed on members who use the discussion box to call the asker’s attention to the fact she entered the question in the wrong language pair for the second or third time, then everybody needs to know that.

KudoZ is a fast-moving activity. Moderators are not always available on short notice. A lot of things can go wrong quickly and getting the language pair sorted out is crucial.

Everybody who contributes to KudoZ needs to know if such comments in the discussion box will result in sanctions and whether staff members are on the same sheet of music as the moderators.

Where does this leave requests for context? Jul 24, 2009

It certainly seems that the rule has been enforced with particular harshness in some cases, which I regret. Some contributors make comments to newcomers with a great deal of courtesy and friendliness and I think this should be permitted, particularly if it helps newcomers to learn the ropes.

I'm left feeling confused as to where this focus on strict interpretation of the rules leaves requests for proper context. If one sticks to the letter of the rule, a request for context is neither an "exchange of information" nor a "linguistic discussion". In my language pair there has recently been a spate of askers posting terms with no context - I have politely drawn their attention to the rule stating that context should be provided, but it now looks as though I have been out of order in doing that. Jared says that "Posts calling attention to the site rules are not necessary" - I beg to disagree, since in my experience it has repeatedly been necessary for people to be reminded about the importance of context when posting questions. Surely Jared isn't saying that we have to channel our requests through a moderator for someone to be reminded about that?

I agree with Armorel Jul 24, 2009

that we must be free to request more context. Some posters need repeated reminders before they understand how vital it is. I hope that the removal of the 'clarification' box means that can no longer request clarification!!
