Lately when I try the Kudoz search function I get results that show the Proz search engine is searching for only parts of a word rather than the entire word I entered. For instance if I enter the Swedish word "inkännande" I get results for other words containing a short sequence from the word I entered such as "godkännande" or "inköp" and compounds made up of these irrelevant words. Restricting to "match whole words only" does not help. What gives?

I have had the same problem Mar 22, 2011

I could be wrong, but it seems worse when the search terms have diacritical marks - the German ß, umlauts, etc. Occasionally when I search for a word with one or more of these marks in it, I get thousands of hits, apparently for the reason you mentioned. Sometimes limiting the search to whole words or the whole phrase (even if it's a single word) works.

It seems to be a problem that comes and goes... Mar 22, 2011

But I've never managed to get any response to have the problem solved.

Terms can be found in Kudoz search results Mar 22, 2011

Dear Alice,

Thank you for submitting a post.

I have made a term search, http://www.proz.com/?sp=ksearch , for both terms you provided here and found out that when searching for "inköp" the system offers at least 9 (nine) total results. As for the second word, "godkännande", could you please let me know if you are sure this word has been translated at ProZ.com? If not, please fe

Already reported Mar 22, 2011

I reported the same problem to the staff on 28th February (search of greek words), and got a reply a couple of hours later saying that this is now being looked into by the site developpers and that I'll be informed as soon as it's fixed.

Cheers

Been happening for ages Mar 22, 2011

Just put inverted commas round your word and you'll get the answers you want. It is annoying, however!

It's the same here Mar 28, 2011

It did happen to me as well, especially when the setting is: Match entire phrase.
And this is "only" searching from English into German.

I usually end up receiving "0" results, especially when it comes to Abbreviations.

However, when I uncheck "Match entire phrase", I get an X-number of results and... among them is the exact phrase.

Still, the Term Search is very helpful.

Regards
Thayenga

To Helen - the problem and the possible cause of it Mar 28, 2011

Helen, I think you misunderstood what Alice said.
She searched for the word "inkännande", nothing else.
The list of results included "godkännande", "inköp" and other words that should not have been included, as they are not "inkännande", and do not contain "inkännande".
The only thing that is common between "inkännande" and these search results is that they share part of the word, for example "inkännande" and "godkännande" both include "kännande". You can see a similar

The only thing that is common between "inkännande" and these search results is that they share part of the word, for example "inkännande" and "godkännande" both include "kännande". You can see a similar issue with "inkännande" and "inköp", with "ink" being the common part.
I have tried this, and it happens exactly as Alice described.

David suggested to put quotation marks around the word, and it does work (it eliminates all those irrelevant search results, leaving 0, because this word is not in the Glossary).

This suggests that the single word "inkännande" is being treated as a phrase made up of multiple words.

This brings in the comment made by Daina regarding characters with diacritical marks. It seems to me she may be hitting the nail on the head. If the system somehow make this word look like separate strings, it would make sense to get results like that. In fact, I tried this, and here is what I saw:

Searching for inkännande (no quotation marks around it) gives exactly the same results as searching for inkä nnande (no quotation marks, and space between inkä and nnande).
This suggests that the search system somehow puts a space after the special character. (Could this be due to using a numerical encoded form of these characters within the system?)

With this additional info, could this be looked into further, please?
Thanks
Katalin
