Hello Lisa,
Which do you find more annoying? Questions asked by non-native speakers that lack a basic grasp of their target language or questions asked by native speakers that lack a basic grasp of their subject matter (and also basic research skills and resources)?
I find the latter significantly more annoying, and I also think that they are significantly more damaging to the reputation of our profession.

Unfortunately the two sometimes go hand-in-hand. I wholeheartedly agree with Neil that non-natives *could” have *much* more knowledge of terminology in a specialist area than a native speaker – I have no doubt about that - which takes us back to the debate on whether or not they should be allowed to answer KudoZ questions, to which my answer would be ‘yes’ and a double 'yes' to posting a discussion entry on the term. However, the example I had in mind in my original post was an apparently native French speaker translating a legal document into English (their profile indicates that they speak both to native standard). The English was incoherent, plus it clearly showed no grasp whatsoever of any legal terms. I’m not picking on one person here; I’ve seen this many times before. I suppose this instance was the straw that broke the camel’s back and made me post this topic, essentially to find out how widespread this is in other language combinations.

That's true, I forgot option (c): those who are not only (1) incompetent translators, but also translating a text on a (2) subject that they don't master into a (3) foreign language that they don't master ... and also misleading clients in respect to their language abilities (and who knows what else).

I happen to see this a lot in my language pair. In this case: German to ENGLISH. Native speakers of precious BRITISH ENGLISH who keep asking for the meaning of the most primitive words in the KudoZ forum because they cannot find the plural form in any dictionary.

You're right, I forgot option D: Lack of knowledge of the source language is, of course, also a major problem that is often forgotten (and may be particularly relevant for those translating into English).
Although (I see Lisa already responded), I would not start an argument on the question of whether the British or Americans are worse at learning foreign languages or which variety of English is the best.

As someone who translates into both (and thus a non-native translator of sorts), I would say that the words "kerb" and "tyre" hurt my eyes, but the same is true of "catalog." I hate writing subject lines underneath the greeting of a letter, but I also hate writing the period/full stop inside the closing quotation mark in the way that I just did... In short: "Can't we all just get along?" (Rodney King)
