I wanted to post an answer to a Kudoz question today, only to see that there was no 'Answer' button available. I notice that the asker had directed the question towards members, but previously non-members were also able to answer such questions. Are there now Kudoz questions that non-members are no longer permitted to answer?

Yes Aug 3, 2012

When posting a Kudoz question there is indeed a "members only" option. I'm not sure if this is a new feature though and have never used it myself.

Targeting KudoZ questions is not new Aug 3, 2012

Hello Tim,

Note that this is not new. KudoZ askers may direct their KudoZ questions specifically to answerers who meet certain criteria, one of these being site membership (other criteria includes native language, working or interest language pair, and interest, working or specialty field). Whenever one of these specifications is selected when posting a question, only those matching the criteria selected by the asker will be able to post their answer.

Hope this explain

This has never been my experiencein the past. I always remember seeing a message along the lines of 'you do not meet the criteria but may answer if you wish', and have never before encountered the situation where the 'Answer' button was absent.

No possibility of answering? Aug 3, 2012

My impression was that there was a box giving the criteria on the top-right of the question, and a message to the effect that you don't meet them but can still propose an answer. If you do give an answer, it is tagged as not being an answerer who meets the criteria. There are also different coloured backgrounds.

Not having an "answer" button at all is new, isn't it? Or is my memory failing me?

Sheila

Example to the contrary Aug 3, 2012

By way of example, within the question:

we find the wording "The asker has directed this question specifically to ProZ.com users who: ... are ProZ.com members,"

yet of the four answerers, one (Cigdem Berret), was not a member, and also the wording "Does not meet criteria" appears in red among her details.

I've seen it in the past. If I felt favourably disposed towards the asker and thought I could contribute a useful answer, I put my suggestion in the Discussion field. Otherwise I just moved on and wasted no more time thinking about it.

Simple acknowledgement needed Aug 3, 2012

Given the above example, and given that I can clearly remember being able to answer such targeted questions in the past, there are two possible explanations:

1. There was a glitch in the question that I tried to answer today. I see that this particular question has now been taken down (or perhaps it has been made invisible to non-members!), which suggests that this explanation may be true, or

2. There has been a change in policy regarding targeted questions.

The question you linked to earlier is from May 2011. It may be that the person who answered was a paying member at the time of answering that particular question, but did not renew her membership in the intervening period.

My experience of KudoZ Aug 3, 2012

I have been a registered site user since Feb 2008. Although I am not currently a paying member, I have had 2 separate periods of paid membership, so I have seen this from both sides.

My experience of targeted questions is slightly different from Lucia's explanation, but I have always found that those questions that state:

The asker has directed this question specifically to ProZ.com users who:
... work in this pair (Your profile does not show that you do) [Edit]... See more

The asker has directed this question specifically to ProZ.com users who:
... work in this pair (Your profile does not show that you do) [Edit]
... report a "working" level of expertise in the subject field (You have not) [Edit]
... are native speakers of English (You have not reported that you are)

etc.
also state:

Although you do not meet the criteria, you may suggest a translation if you like

whereas those that state:

The asker has directed this question specifically to ProZ.com users who:
... are ProZ.com members (You do not appear to be)

do not allow non-members to post answers, reference comments or peer comments (agree/disagree/neutral). Non-members can only post discussion entries.

This frequently leads to confusion and discussion entries about the targeting of questions.

To illustrate that this is not new, here is an example from 2009:
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/english_to_spanish/finance_general/3405698-fianza.html

I also agree with urbom. Cigdem Berret will have been a member at the time she answered the question. The various details have since been updated to reflect her new status, but the answer is of course not removed. Hence it now appears that a non-member was in fact able to post an answer.

Questions restricted to paying members only have never been open to non-payers Aug 3, 2012

Robert Forstag wrote:

People have always been able to answer 'restricted' questions (native speakers only, those who work in the field, etc.) with the exception of member-only questions. In fact non-paying members (nowadays 'users') can't even make a peer comment on such questions. This may be seen as a silly, pointless restriction by some, but it is definitely not new. Afaik

I seem to recall differently. Anyhow, I do not have time to plough through all of my past Kudoz answers to find a counterexample. Perhaps my memory is playing tricks on me.

I have e-mailed that person, and it seems that you are right. She was a member at that time.

OK. Thanks for your clarification. I only have been able to see all of the other restrictions, since I've been a full member for the past nine years.

So scratch what I said earlier.
