Dear colleagues,
I believe this topic has been already discussed in the forum at some point but I did not find very informative entries so I've decided to raise it once again.
From time to time there appear people in the kudoz, who offer their answer with minor change of the answer(s) if previous responders or compiling the answers from several previous answers. (I mean entries that are submitted really much later and not simulteneous answers.)

While this may be appropriate from time to time, it demonstrates unethical behaviour if this happens regularly from the same person.
I wonder how we should react to such behaviour. I've started to put "disagree" to the similar or very close answers submitted at much later time. How do you react on it if you do? What do you think if we have to react at all or just pay no attention? ▲ Collapse | | |
If I am the asker, I will provide the points to those, who were first AND right.
If a 99,9% similar suggestion had been made some time later, it is ok, but the first colleague, who was helpful and on the right track, should get the points.
On the other side - if I am not the asker and I make a suggestion, I really just do it just in order to help.

Could it also be that two people were preparing their answer at about the same time and just that one was faster in posting it.
I would not be very upset if the answers came shortly after each other - time wise.
But you are right. In other cases it is annoying.

I agree with you 90%.
That said, occasionally the belated answer might look very similar general content wise but could have that single special word that makes all the difference.

I dont't understand why people are worried about Kudoz so much, the main goal is that people get the best possible answer. If it helps that people provide multiple similar answers, why would it be an issue?

Sometimes, it is the subtle differences that really matter. However, if I am suggesting a very similar translation with merely a point of style as the difference, I often agree with the first answerer and add a note as a comment with my agree.

If, on the other hand, you have something extra to contribute by way of a slightly different answer and an explanation/justification which may really help the asker, I think the only thing to do is to submit a separate answer. In fact the system positively encourages you to do this as the "Ask the Asker" function is really only to ask for clarification from the asker, not to provide answers. ▲ Collapse | | | Maciek Drobka Poljska Local time: 22:55 Član (2006) engleski na poljski + ... Well, for some, me included, it is also about the points. It's nice to help others, but it is at least equally as nice for me to get new jobs because I am ranked high in the Freelancers directory with all the points I have accumulated.

It has happened to me many times: while I am documenting an answer with references and examples, other answer or answers are posted. They were not there when I started my research. Only when I hit the appropriate button did the new answers appear.
I do not think there should be an issue. If the answers coincide, chances are that they are right. Good for the asker. He or she grades how useful the answer was, not how accurate or good it was. Askers many times choose an answer that is not a good one. Sometimes they have parameters to determine whether the answer is correct, sometimes they don't. | | | Beatriz Galiano (X) Argentina Local time: 17:55 engleski na španjolski + ...

I understand Marina, when somebody keeps doing the same 'strange' thing day by day, you get a bit tired and wonder...what's going on...
On the other hand, answers are meant to help askers in their translations, but if there is a system of kudoz for the right answer then it must be given to the right answer, to the best of the askers knowledge which sometimes is very poor in the field hes asking. | | | Marina Mrouga Local time: 23:55 engleski na ukrajinski + ... I am a bit worried about this practice. I think the "disagree" button is there for linguistic comments, not to express criticism of another answerer's ethics. In fact, if the answer is correct (but for the fact that it has been copied from someone else) a "disagree"-comment would not be helpful to the asker or other users trying to find terms in the Kudoz glossary. | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Similar translation for Kudoz entries offered by next prozian LinguaCore |
