Inadequate CONTEXT Feb 23, 2008

Hi, Kim,

True, I don't have to answer questions with inadequate CONTEXT, and as you well know, it is a problem I often point out, and many I do not answer for that reason.

Some I will answer anyway with reservations, and in still other cases it may not be apparent that more CONTEXT would indicate a different answer, but that can happen.

At any rate, my point is that it is up to the asker to confirm the replies coming in, and not take any opinion on its face

"the fact that I've recently spotted people entering peer comments (agree/disagree) on Kudoz questions in languages which are not part of their profile is somewhat scary. Does that mean that anybody can just click on agree/disagree, just to get the hot steaming Browniz?
Peer comments to a Kudoz question are almost as important as the answer itself,

Dear Ioanna, you are right and some posters in this topic too. They missed a fact you described, those "colleagues" never put comments but agree or never write in ask the asker field, they just leave the agrees without any concern, whom they agree with or which answer is really good and valuable.
I decided to act another way and I sent a message directly to one of them.

"Dear ***,
do you know Hungarian? If not, just let me tell you a good advice, would be better remove your "agree"-s from Hungarian topics, because it is not adequate KudoZ use: if you do not know even the language, how can you agree with?
KudoZ is more serious, if you made it "just for points", you are going wrong way...
regards, "

Few hours later I received the polite answer, and the person removed his agrees.

Thank you Erzsebet and everyone,
My point was not so much regarding answerers in general, but mainly regarding those who don't seem to be familiar with the language and who make peer comments just by clicking on a button, without adding any input; this, to me, smells like abuse.
However, it was great reading all your points of view, making it a very interesting debate. I keep your suggestion of reporting any suspected abuse to the moderator of the forum.

We do try to keep an eye on 'our' language pairs, but we have deadlines and lives outside Proz.com too ... so there is no guarantee that we see everything.

Please, if anyone seems to be simply sprinkling agrees around to collect BrowniZ, let us know, so we can look into it. We can see if it is a 'mistake' that has only occurred a few times, or whether there is a pattern in it. As Erzsébet found out, a friendly reminder sometimes works wonders.

Happy translating!

And I would like to add one more: don't disagree with an answer unless it is definitely wrong and you enter a better answer.

Disagree - it's something which has been debated before, and there are two seemingly irreconcilable camps on this one. Personally, if I have provided an answer of my own I never disagree with someone else's - unless it really is totally incorrect - as I consider it bad manners.

Sounds exactly the same as what I'm saying but you're wording it a little differently.

Well, you said "don't disagree unless... you enter a better answer" - whereas I'm saying, as a general rule, "don't enter an answer if you've disagreed with someone else's answer" (or "don't disagree with someone else's answer if you've entered your own answer"). So it's the exact opposite.
