@ Phil: I thought of "independant instances", too, in regards to computer software, but I really don't know if that's what they're referring to here.

"Instances" can mean a few different things. More context would help.

Is it hardware or software? If it's the latter, the translation has to be "instances".

would it change the meaning if you just said have several individual/separate strongboxes. I realise that 'independantes' modifies 'instances', but am wondering if instances adds much to the actual meaning.
