screw backlash

A screw converts rotational motion into translational motion. If the mating threads are not perfectly in contact, there is a small angular dead zone in which rotation fails to provide translation (remember the steering in minis?)

French term (edited): jeu de la vis ou du système de transmission

play in the screw assembly or in the transmission system

a screw in itself can't have any "jeu"; it's the assembly of the screw with another part that can "avoir du jeu" - be slightly loose - have some play
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Sounds like this may be some kind of drive screw (cf. 'pas de vis'), in which case it can of course have a degree of 'play'

disagree Tony M : A 'jeu de vis' might translate to 'a set of screws', but that's not what it is here; and a 'set screw' is something totally different.
