If you want us to help you, PLEASE give some more context --- 'engines' could mean almost anything? What TYPE of engine? Internal combustion / jet / gas turbine / steam...? What PART of the engine is this referring to?

Sounds to me more like this is part of the conveyor drive system, rather than the actual engine itself. I don't know much about them myself, but a quick Google on 'conveyor' + 'amplitude' threw up a number of interesting-looking links that I haven't looked into further.
This one looked the most promising, I thought:
