UNITÉ DE REPLI MÉDICALE ONCOLO

French to English Medical Medical (general) repli
Hello,

A hospital oncology unit the name of which I am translating contains the word 'repli' and I would like help in understanding it. Surely it doesn't mean 'withdrawal' or 'retreat' (common translations for it) or similar in this context?

Thank you in advance.

Discussion

Daryo Aug 15, 2023:
"backup" would make sense for units that are kept empty and unused, ready to be used if "main units" become unusable for whatever reason - there are whole office blocks like that.

But this "Unité De Repli" seems to be in regular use, so THAT meaning of "... de repli" wouldn't make sense in this ST.

So far, what would make sense is "repli" in the sense of "stepping back" from some more intensive / urgent care.
philgoddard Aug 15, 2023:
Emmanuella's reference is worth looking at, and I don't believe it means 'backup'. In her example, 'repli' refers to hospice care.
Translator876 (asker) Aug 14, 2023:
Thanks, Thomas, for your input. 'Contingency' or 'back-up' does seem to fit here...
Thomas Miles Aug 14, 2023:
'contingency' Stressing that I am not an expert in the medical field, I do remember a project (involving demolition and site access) where 'contingency' turned out to be the best fit for 'repli'. I'll let you decide if this would work well here.

Thank you.
agree Andrew Bramhall : Yes, but you should have left out ' probably' in the answer box!

Thank you, yes.
neutral philgoddard : Maybe, but neither of your references explains 'repli'.

neutral Daryo : Ought to be some kind of fall-back // back-up // alternative unit ready in case of increased demand or the main unit becoming unavailable? // But... with some "collateral thinking" the intended meaning **can** be deciphered with reasonable certainty.

French term (edited): Unité De Repli Médecine Oncologique

Post-Intensive Oncology Care Unit / Post-ICU Oncology Care Unit

here is one:

https://www.sante.fr/etablissement-de-soins-pluridisciplinai...

but it say nothing about what they do exactly, why would that unit be called "de repli" and not simply "d'oncologie"

BUT

There is an analogy with:

En France, une unité neurovasculaire (UNV) est un service de soins rattaché à un service hospitalier de neurologie. Elle se compose de deux entités :

-- une unité de soins intensifs neurovasculaire (USINV) permettant la surveillance 24 h sur 24 des patients hospitalisés pour un accident vasculaire cérébral (AVC) et nécessitant une surveillance intensive neurologique et hémodynamique ;

-- une unité dite « de repli » ou « dédiée » permettant d'assurer aux patients une prise en charge spécialisée une fois qu'il n'y a plus nécessité d'une surveillance intensive.#
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unité_neurovasculaire

so "le repli" here is "falling back / stepping down from intensive care"

Post-acute Care for People with Cancer

Post-acute Care for People with Cancer

Post-acute care may provide options for people with cancer who are not able to return home after being in the hospital. There are several types of facilities that provide post-acute care. Each focuses on a specific type of care needed to help people regain their strength and ability to care for themselves.

neutral Drmanu49 : Where do you get post ICU for oncology??? Quite different from neurology.

After a surgical intervention on a tumor? Or when a terminal cancer patient is permanently on pain-killers? You see any better parallel / analogy? Apart from guessing based on the general context-free meaning of "repli"?
