I sometimes utilize and will do my own network from now on too. Also I noticed it is important to communicate with them because they have expert knowledge which has seldom appeared on KudoZ.
Recently I provided a KudoZ asker with their knowledge 2 times...
I wonder if my reply was helpful and if it was worth while devoting my precious time.
Truly, as Lany Chabot says not everyone has the time, I also have no time. Gradely I would like to have more time to spend for unwinding myself. I don't think I want to get points and haven't thought it before. Indeed I am pleased when my answer was selected as an best one. The reason why I participate in it is to learn skill from other translators. Of course, it is also for helping askers. I sometimes awaken to learn skills from Pro translators. However I am now wondering if it has been really fruitful for myself and askers comprehensively. Of course,I will continuously provide with my answer if I can think it is helpful and supportive although I might provide with incorrect information at moments.
Also probably many ProZ peers may have other network like I. And most recently, several specialists have appeared there... If they and many other specialists would be more cooperative for KudoZ, it would be more professional community. .

Thanks and Best Regards,

Mami

I believe that Proz should establish a mechanism to prevent such abuse resp. to exclude the abusers from Proz.

Abuse? Do you think it is abuse if some people are better askers than answerers? Remember, people who ask questions also contribute -- they make it possible for you to earn KudoZ points, and they give you the opportunity to think about translations issues that you would not have been exposed to otherwise. Both these aspects are good for you.

Totally agree on that one, I don't think it matters much if asking or answering questions.

Asking KudoZ questions should be a last resort, not a daily occurrence. I try to avoid take-all-and-give-nothing posters.

I just saw the profile of a kudoz asker: many questions, 0 answers, the image of a smiley and the text: help wanted.

I keep laughing, but this proz.com user clearly thinks that proz is the place where you can get free help and that's all. I have no problem answering such questions actually, but it is a pitty that these translators don't know about other proz.com features. For example most of them don't know to search in the open glossary and they keep reposting the same terms. Maybe they should be asked, before posting the question, if they have already researched the glossary and a link to the open glossary should be provided.

I don't think some askers really need help Jul 6, 2011

Some translators in my language pair ask questions one after another. I don't know why they have so many questions to ask.

And some of them never accept colleagues' answers but his / her own, which sometimes are wrong. It is not necessary to ask others if they are so confident.

Maybe they just want to draw potential clients' attention. Maybe the clients think, " This translator asks so many questions related to the same field, so he / she may be an Expert in this field

But if I were one of the clients, I would not hire such translators. They are either incompetent or cunning.

Exactly. If I was an outsourcer, I would never hire a translator who has to ask 1,000 questions every year and does not have to expertise or willingness to answer questions.

Trouble is... Jul 7, 2011

I completely agree with you, Bernhard. There is a clear difference between abusing the system and asking for help. Posting several hundreds or even thousands of questions definitely is abuse. Most of these questions are either basic or demonstrating the lack of skills to do a research or to come up with a nice wording on one's own. I do not see why the professional community should help such translators to stay afloat.

we can discuss KudoZ abuse until our faces turn blue, because it was clearly said by ProZ.com staff that there will be no changes in this feature.

I tend to think that X questions vs. 0 answers is indeed abuse. But I also think that the filtering functions are not strictly for the birds.

Asking questions can be helpful for other translators Jul 7, 2011

There are many questions I never have to ask, because somebody else already did. Those wouldn't be of much use without the many answers of course, but still, in my opinion both are contributing helpful information to the community: The asker and the answerer.

agree with you. I completely filter those, and propose answers only to fair questions, directly. And yes, one easily tell one from the other.
As to various names - that only site management could perhaps deal with.
Regards.

Who is being abused? Jul 7, 2011

Personally, I think that some KudoZ Askers reveal themselves to be so incompetent by the questions they ask, the number of questions and the way they ask them (as well as the answers they select) that I do not want them wasting my time by trying to answer a question for me.

The people they are really abusing are their clients because the bits they actually translate themselves, in between the bits they get answered on KudoZ, are probably rubbish.

There are some people whom I filter because I don't think they should be translating at all and I don't want to help them by answering their questions.

Are they real? Jul 7, 2011

It has occurred to me that some of the Answerers might not be real people and might be avatars planted by Google Translate etc. to try out their machine translations. Does anybody else get that impression?

In my language pair Jul 7, 2011

There are way more translators who are willing to answer a question than those willing to ask a question.

In this situation, there is no reason to expect a zillion question asker to become a frequent answerer, too.

Answering questions is my chief interest here. That too is a learning experience. I get a fair amount of criticism, even that helps; and, yes, I am sometimes wondering about the answers that tend to be accepted.
