Agree, Klaus. I remember the days of frank but civilized and humorous, witty comments and "debate" in English to German KudoZ. I don't participate much in that pair anymore because I got my fingers burned too often - as a non-native speaker, so I can't say from personal experience if things have changed drastically. I think I learned as much about translating when I first started out in Eng-Ger as in the forums. The community spirit worked wonders in English to German, and most of the time in German to English.
If I understand what you mean by "community spirit", it's members helping members become better translators. Rules and regulations may be stifling the kind of interaction that does the most to keep a KudoZ community healthy.
I agree with what both Klaus and Kim have to say (though I love to answer English-German questions just to bug Klaus - at least I use umlauts ).
No, but seriously, it is exactly the kind of "mudslinging" that Klaus is reffering to (and which he occasionally dishes out) that has opened my eyes to common mistakes and improved my translating ability - I wish more members would be so frank.
I am not for more rules, but rather gentle peer pressure, which I think leads to better results in the long run.

I think asking questions is a good thing. If we identify ourselves and ask questions I see no problem. After all nobody knows it all
I just disagree with the possibility of asking questions if the person asking the question is not identified or is called ", @, etc. Nobody is called @ so a person calling himself that is just making fun of us.

Also, I think before asking other people we should make our own research. I only ask questions when I truly don't find an acceptable answer using my own resources. This should be applied to everyone. Easy words can be found on a dictionary! Difficult ones can be found on specialty books and if not asking other PRO members can prove quite good.
What's an easy word? Well, I think any good EN>PT dictionary contains a Portuguese translation for English word "hello" so I guess I can say "hello" is an easy word, therefore I think we should ignore queries on the Portuguese translation of word "hello" when asked at KUDOZ, don't you?
Of course, PROZ is a democratic place, so I guess we shouldn't be worrying with these issues so much if we can't just change it.
